Xenon, Incandescent & LED Strip Lights for Under Cabinet Lighting Projects.
What is xenon under cabinet lighting?Xenon under cabinet lights is technically a form of incandescent lighting, although they are classified separately because they utilize a specific type of gas—xenon—to produce a superior level of light.
Xenon under cabinet lights have an uncanny ability to render color with exquisite detail. They bring out the richness and depth of warm colors, and they make for an ideal lamping option for any under cabinet lighting application that requires a blend of task and decorative appeal.
Xenon in cabinet lighting has become very popular due to the increasingly sophisticated detail we find in rooms that feature cabinets. The custom home industry has enlarged traditionally smaller and exclusively functional rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms into spacious, more heavily decorated areas.
Marble and granite counter tops have consequently become very popular, and nothing renders the depths of dark blues and reds underneath a cabinet quite like xenon light.
Are incandescent lights equally effective?
In some settings, they are. The key is the “warmth” of the color scheme.
Incandescents produce a steady distribution of very whit light and work very well when lighting cool color schemes such as white or off white counter tops. They are also very good for small kitchens and bathrooms
Don’t incandescents and xenons use a lot of electricity?
Not if they are configured on a low voltage strip lighting fixture.
Incandescent technology became very cost effective when low voltage transformers replaced the magnetic ballasts of previous fluorescent housings, rendering a 120V lamp a 12V power saving device.
Low voltage lighting systems can also help extend incandescent bulb type up to 7,500 hours, minimizing replacement costs as well as electrical costs.
Is halogen under cabinet lighting better than xenon?
It is not a question of better so much as it is a matter of what is appropriate to the environment. Halogens under cabinet lights, like xenon, are very powerful and produce very good color rendering.
They burn extremely hot, however, and they have a much shorter bulb life—only 2,000 hours maximum.
They work best in small, ornately decorated kitchens and bathrooms because they produce excellent decorative lighting that is also very bright. The lights are never on for very long, but when they are, they make wallpaper and decorations stand out and provide clear visibility for guests.
Do under cabinet lighting manufacturers still make fluorescent fixtures along with xenon, incandescent, and halogen?
Yes. Fluorescents will probably never completely disappear. They still have their place in the industrial world today, but over the years, newer and more efficient technologies have replaced them in more aesthetically conscious environments.
The greatest contribution fluorescents have made to under has been in terms of physical design. The original fluorescent task lights served as the prototype for today’s linear strip lights.
However, physically housing a transformer within the unit itself resulted in a bulkier unit that could only fit under the back of the cabinet and throw the light forward
The Latest and Greatest is found at Phantom
Over the years, low voltage strip lighting manufacturers such as Phantom developed technology that allowed them to remove the low voltage transformer from the unit housing to a concealed, remote location.
Under cabinet xenon, incandescent, and led strip lights can now be installed at the front of the cabinet, throwing the light backward away from the eyes and creating an evenly distributed “wash” of light over counter tops and appliances.
Phantom engineering completely conceals all visible wiring and creates the appearance of sourceless light.
Xenon low voltage under cabinet lighting strips by Phantom are some of the most advanced and streamlined accent lighting tools on today’s market. Custom-manufactured to exact cabinet dimensions, Phantom linear strips remain hidden from normal viewing angles and provide superior light distribution and glare reduction through patented lamping designs and glare shields found nowhere else in the world.

Lighting Contemporary Fine Art with Phantom Low Voltage Projectors & Strip Lights.
Contemporary design conveys a style and establishes a sense of class unique unto itself. Through minimalism and differentiation, it is able to suggest universal absolutes but never conclusively or dogmatically asserting their ultimate existence. In some decorative schemes, the only truly unifying factor in an otherwise disjointed array of shapes, sizes, and colors that speak so strongly of themselves that their only commonality is the light that shines upon them.
Metaphorically speaking, we might describe contemporary furnishings as art, and contemporary light as the visual tour guide that leads the eye through a quantum landscape of stark individuation and divergence.
It is the lighting designer’s foremost responsibility to find points within this landscape that can function as connecting “landmarks” that bring the various elements together.
Objects such as furniture, sculptures, lamps, and other decorations in a contemporary home often represent a form of art that either compliments wall art and sculpture, or in some instances, replaces them altogether.
Full-wall murals and abstract pieces often decorate walls in contemporary living rooms and dens, and these elements require attention from lights that will define their essence and balance their individual presentations with furnishings and interior architecture.
Contemporary lighting also requires heavy attention be paid to fixture style and to lighting angle of incident. Fixtures must either look like contemporary elements themselves, or they must conceal their own presence and illuminate decorative pieces with what appears to be sourceless light.
The following summary represents a few of the major categories of contemporary lighting fixtures and some of the more common arenas in which they are applied.
Wall Lighting
Contemporary sconces often look very different than their traditional counterparts. They can be very futuristic in physical design, and they are often tied to user-friendly dimmer switches that allow people to adjust the light quickly and easily.
Floor Lighting
Contemporary floor lighting unites task with the abstract by heavily relying upon the lamps themselves as decorative fixtures. It is not uncommon to find highly avant-garde lamps in a contemporary den or living room that add both a unique sense of form, but sometimes even a very unique and warm sense of color to the scheme.
Ceiling Pendant Lights
In contemporary lighting, pendant lights are more highly favored as either futuristic pieces or abstract elements that add a touch of the avant-garde to the top of the room.
Pendant lights add depth and dimension to contemporary design by making larger furnishings such as tables and desks stand out. They also act as centralizing forces that concentrate a down light in the center of the room and unite wall and floor lighting with something akin to a latticework effect.
Recessed Ceiling Lights
Recessed lights can be aimed at different angles of incident to produce pinpoint directional lighting.
Some recessed projector lights can be rotated a full 360 degrees, and they can be used to accent photography collections and hanging prints, abstract designs, and some sculpture.
They are limited in two major respects, however, that make them less than ideal for use as art lights.
For one thing, they produce harmful UV light that can damage oils and canvases. Secondly, while recessed lights allow for directional adjustment, they do not allow for precision adjustments of the light beams themselves.
For such requirements, art projectors provide a much better source of contemporary art lighting.
Art Projectors
Art projector lights have a wonderful way of seamlessly integrating into any type of lighting design. Highly favored by galleries and residential art collectors, they provide a clean and hidden source of contemporary lighting.
They can be used to illuminate everything from black and white photography to abstract three-dimensional sculpture.
Because the light appears to come from the subject and not the fixture, objects, paintings, prints, and photos appear to magically glow with their own light.
Strip Lights
Accent lighting plays an essential role in contemporary lighting design, as it does in almost every decorative lighting genre.
Strip lights provide an excellent source of linear accent lighting that can compliment interior architecture, coves, cabinets, and furniture.
Regardless of their actual position, hidden linear lights introduce a floating effect that accentuates contemporary furnishings with subtlety and sophistication.

The interplay between light and shadow found in almost every picture must be enhanced, not diminished, by exhibition lighting.
The interplay between light and shadow found in almost every picture must be enhanced, not diminished, by exhibition picture lighting.
While it is the case that photography and painting have perspective and shade in common, beyond this, they diverge into vastly different arenas that carry their own unique sets of requirements for truly effective and supportive illumination.
Photography
Photography as art has gained enormous popularity, and it continues to rise in prestige and demand.
It represents a very unique form of art because of the way it challenges our perceptions of reality as a fixed absolute.
Photography allows for any scene in real-time to be captured as is, but subtly altered by the perceptions and emotions of the photographer.
Photography is often exhibited in black and white, where perception within the mind and the facts of the world surrounding the observer intersect at the points where light and shadow converge.
Black and white forces us to question our sense of absolutes by moving us beyond duality into multitudinous shades of gray.
Picture lights used to illuminate photographic exhibitions must support this artistic intention to be truly effective. Picture lighting in a black and white photography exhibit must be precisely adjusted to avoid diminishing the subtle variations in gray scale.
Many galleries showcase photography using halogen lights that come in “expo” mounting kits. These fixtures usually consist of a mounting bracket that attaches to the wall, an adjustable arm, and a halogen bulb that directs light onto the picture from an optimal angle of incident.
Halogen is a very bright source of exhibition picture light, and it is ideal for rendering both colors and any black and white scene where stark contrasts define artistic tone.
Without special lenses and filters, though, halogen bulbs are rather limited in their ability to properly support special affects photography.
Halogen-sourced low voltage lighting is often too bright for special effects exhibits, many of which showcase pictures taken at night using infrared cameras that add surreal shades of red to the backdrop of a dark, ominous landscape.
Paintings
Expo picture lights can also be used for painting exhibitions, provided they are either UV-filtered to protect the paint and canvas, or if they are used for only a short period of time in a very temporary setting.
Many civic centers, public schools, community colleges, and libraries will exhibit pictures painted in watercolor by local children, and these organizations can find a number of affordable expo lighting kits to accommodate a temporary, “gallery” type setup.
A less expensive alternative for exhibition picture lighting at general community events is the use of battery-powered, LED over-the-picture-lights. LED technology by lighting manufacturers is extremely sophisticated in two respects. Its power-saving design requires only 20% the electricity as halogen light and therefore provides much longer lamp and battery life. It also produces no ultraviolet radiation and is safe to use over oils and acrylics.
Over-the-picture LED lights are also ideal for exhibitions where local artists move from location to location to sell their work. They can be removed, transported, and reinstalled quickly; and they come in a variety of finishes that make local talent stand out exquisitely.
Formal Exhibitions Generally require projectors for picture lighting
Recessed lighting projectors reside in the ceiling above normal horizontal viewing angles. They also provide the most advanced filtration and adjustment mechanism to precisely “fine-tune” the light to the exact dimensions, color rendering, depth and shadow, and overall tone of the piece.

Our Low Voltage Lighting System uses Incandescent, Xenon, Halogen or LED Light Bulbs.
Low voltage lighting systems allow you to use powerful and precise sources of light for a fraction of the cost of high voltage equivalents. Low voltage lighting systems can use incandescent, Xenon, or LED light bulbs at a fraction of the cost of high voltage equivalents.
Because they are so efficient they also require less maintenance than 120VAC systems. The average lamp life on a low voltage system is normally 4,000 hours. The key to achieving this efficiency lies in the use of magnetic transformers that reduce 120VAC to either 24VAC or 12VAC. These transformers are either surface mounted installed in remote locations outside of viewing angles.
They can also be manufactured with decorative designs that blend more harmoniously with surroundings.
These arrays can also be equipped with dimmer switches to generate further savings. Dimmers are very user friendly and allow for precise regulation of current at the turn of a knob or the touch of a button.
What types of low voltage lighting systems are there?
There are both outdoor low voltage lighting systems and indoor low voltage lighting systems.
12VAC and 24VAC outdoor lighting arrays figure prominently in the world of landscape lighting. This is because they are so highly effective in producing a number of accent lighting techniques that add dimension and emphasis to trees, gardens, man made architecture and three-dimensional art.
For path lighting, walkway lighting, step lighting, and any type of decorative lighting along walls and patios, they simply cannot be outperformed. The reason for this fact is simple. These lights have to be left on throughout the night both to ensure safe passage for pedestrians and to maintain a consistent visual presentation. It is seldom cost effective to do this with a 120VAC system because of power costs.
Indoor low voltage lighting systems tend to be more decorative, providing ambient accent lighting in cabinets and overall decor.
Indoor low voltage lighting systems can be very simple, consisting of only a few decorative art lighting fixtures or projector lighting fixtures positioned in key locations in living rooms, dens, or bathrooms.
They can also be much more complex, representing entire subsystems on a home lighting control network tied to touch panels, automated timers, and wireless controls.
What types of indoor low voltage lighting systems are available?
There are three major categories of low voltage indoor lights: linear, recessed, and surface mounted.
Linear lighting strips are normally used as display lights that when showcasing collectibles or fine hardback books. They are also very popular in kitchens as under cabinet lighting and bathrooms as cove lighting.
Recessed lights install in the ceiling and project at various angles of lighting incident onto wall art, photography, or three-dimensional art.
They have also become quite popular for low-level accent lighting in guest baths and even some larger kitchens where cooking parties are a favored form of entertainment.
Surface mounted low voltage lights tend to be desk and floor lamps that add color and “washes” of light to reading areas, computer work areas, and personal dens.
They are highly favored in bedroom lighting as mood lights, and they can also be used as task lights in some home theater systems.
Does Phantom manufacture low voltage lighting systems?
Yes.
We manufacture six lines of linear strips, all of which can be custom ordered with either 12VAC or 24VAC magnetic transformers. These low voltage lighting systems are designed with aesthetics foremost in mind. Our transformers are smaller than competing models, and thus easier to conceal. The strips themselves are also easy to conceal because they keep such a low profile and hide themselves from normal viewing angles.
Phantom strip lights are easy to install, fully dimmable and available in all bulb types. Extra power savings and superior aesthetics can be achieved by investing in Phantom strips fitted with LED lamps.
Phantom LED technology rivals that of Xenon in lumens output and uses only 20% of the power of an incandescent system. Low voltage combined with dimmable LED replacement festoon lamps represents a power reduction unimaginable in the past, and proves ideal for commercial showcase lighting as well as residential display lighting.

Specialty LED Lamp Manufacturer
As a specialty LED lamp manufacturer, Phantom is a solution source not only for designers, but also for other strip lighting manufacturers. Our patented LED lamps are engineered to fit both our own linear lighting strips and the linear lighting fixture of other manufacturers. This makes them ideal retrofits for those seeking to reduce wattage per square foot requirements necessary for obtaining LEEDS certification. We also manufacture LED light bulbs with client convenience foremost in mind. Unlike competing models that require DC power inverters for retrofit applications, all of our LED lamps are operable on standard 12VAC magnetic transformers. Best of all, Phantom manufactures LED lamps that rival the lumens output and physical dimensions of industry standard incandescent and xenon lamps. This allows them to function as replacements that reduce power while preserving color rendering, lighting levels, and glare free ambient lighting effects.Don’t LED lamps output fewer lumens than incandescent or Xenon lamps?
Most “industry standard” lamps do indeed output lower levels of light. However, Phantom stands unique among LED lamp manufacturers, offering a patented line of festoons designed to rival the output of traditional bulb technologies.
The difference lies in both the bulbs utilized and in how they are installed in the lamping module.
Most LED low voltage lighting manufacturers design festoon lamps that consist of either 5mm, or “toppled” LED’s. This results in a lower level of output than traditional technologies are able to produce. As a general rule, these lamps only produce 1 to 1.5 lumens of output.
This limits the retrofitting capabilities of most LED festoons to only the lowest ambient lighting applications and renders them ineffective for high-end display and showcase lighting where greater visibility is required.
Phantom LED lamps, on the other hand, uses commercial quality bulbs graded rated at the highest level of industry excellence.
These accent lighting tools are designed into a patented lamping design found only through Phantom Lighting.
Each Phantom lamp consists of three-½ watt LED bulbs with tight color binning and a color rendering index rating of approximately 80. The close proximity of highly rated commercial bulbs within the festoon housing results in a total output of 50 lumens. This level of light is equivalent to that of a 7-watt incandescent bulb, making it an ideal replacement for any existing xenon low voltage lighting.
The lamp itself is extremely compact, intended to mirror the size and dimensions of incandescent equivalents. A Phantom LED measures only 1-11/16” in overall length, 9/16” in width and 3/8” in depth.
Can Phantom LED Lamps help my company achieve LEED certification?
Yes. Phantom lamps can help you reduce your wattage per square foot. This is a perfect energy saving LED lighting product that is a major factor in obtaining a LEED certification.
We manufacture our LED lamps with such precision that they produce only trace levels of forward throw heat and minimal wattage per foot. Although the Phantom LED lamp is equivalent in lumens output to a 7-watt incandescent bulb, it only radiates the equivalent of a 1-watt light bulb in heat. Normal operating temperatures will range between –40 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
The quantum efficiency of our festoons is actually superior to that of incandescents and xenon, and further power savings can be achieved with the use of dimmer switches. You don’t even have to replace your existing low voltage cabinet lighting strips to achieve this power reduction. Provided the strips operate on 12VAC magnetic transformers, the lamps can simply snap into places previously held by less energy efficient festoons.
How do Phantom LED lamps rate on the aesthetic end of the spectrum?
Simply among the best. Phantom lighting strips are technically classified as luxury lighting items, having originally been conceived by our engineers as an aesthetic alternative to visible fixtures and wiring that detract from showcases, cove lighting, displays, and decorative cabinets.
We have always combined our vision of aesthetics, though, with practicality, which accounts for our leadership position as one of the most cost-effective manufacturers of energy saving LED festoon lamps.
Our festoons are available in a broad spectrum of color temperatures that include, but are not limited to, Warm White 2950K, 3500K, 5000K and Daylight 6500K. Colored LED lamps are also available in the standard LED colors, Red, Blue, and Green. Specific lumens output for the 2950K PHANTOM LED LAMP is 42 lumens, 45 lumens for 3500K, and roughly 50 lumens for the 5000K and 6500K lamps.
This allows the Phantom festoon virtually unlimited versatility in a very wide range of residential and commercial linear strip under cabinet lighting applications.

Cordless picture lights of any variety offer more placement options because they have no external cords or wires to conceal.
Before investing in cordless picture lighting, it is necessary to obtain a sound understanding of how the different types of picture lights operate and what specific advantages they offer the home and commercial decorator.Because they are either batter operated or install in the ceiling, there is no wiring to conceal. There are also literally thousands of different cordless battery powered picture lights to choose from, a good number of which are very affordable and ideal for smaller households on a budget.
Battery Powered Cordless Lights
Battery powered picture frame lighting fixtures work well for illuminating prints and photographs when high performance is not an issue. They are relatively inexpensive to purchase and do not require a technician to install. Most major lighting manufacturers make them, so one can have name brand equipment at an affordable price point.
Battery powered cordless units are ideal for art lighting any type of print or photograph housed in non glass panel frame. They are also ideal for smaller pictures and fit conveniently over the top of the frame, becoming almost a part of the picture themselves.
Recessed Ceiling Lights
Recessed lights are technically categorized as cordless picture lights because they wire directly into the home or office electrical system as opposed to operating from a power outlet or a battery.
A professional electrician must install these fixtures, and the installer will have to cut into your ceiling to fit them.
If this is affordable and acceptable to you, recessed picture lights will make an ideal source of illumination for larger works of art that require a special spotlight. Multiple unites can be used to light entire collections of prints, photographs, or paintings along an entire wall.
Recessed picture lights can either be low voltage or high voltage, depending on your budget for power costs and the need for lighting intensity.
Low voltage lighting tend to feature pinhole apertures that produce minimal glare. They work very well for any collection where glass panes cover the artwork.
Incandescent bulbs produce a white light that is ideal for illuminating black and white photography. For color photographs, low voltage halogen lighting produce a low wattage, high intensity light with superior color rendering capabilities.
Normally, a lighting company licensed to install recessed lighting also consults with either a lighting design company or certifies its electricians in lighting design. If you have questions about which lights will work best with your collection, your installers should be able to give you sound, professional recommendations on the best fixtures to use or contact a artwork lighting expert.
Fine Art Projectors
When it comes to lighting fine oils on canvas, we really recommend you consider higher price points and more sophisticated technology than battery powered and recessed cordless picture lights. This is because fine art tends to be very delicate and requires light that is completely free of ultraviolet radiation and infrared heat. To ensure the integrity of your art, and to give an original piece the proper spotlight it deserves, consider the benefits of picture lighting with a ceiling-mounted, Phantom Contour Projector.
These proprietary projectors utilize a complex system of lenses and filters to strip the light beam of harmful wavelengths. Like recessed lights, they install above the line of sight into the ceiling of a room.
Click here to read about recessed lighting projectors that are designed for remodel projector applications or replacing an existing accent light without having to patch or paint the ceiling.
Phantom Linear Strip Lights
Perhaps the most innovative way for lighting small pictures like cordless fixtures inside cabinets is by using a linear cabinet lighting fixture.
Phantom linear lighting strips fit directly onto display cabinet shelves and use existing metal shelf standards instead of traditional wiring to conduct electricity. Their low profile position makes them almost impossible for the casual viewer to see, and they can be fitted with incandescent, xenon, and LED bulbs to accommodate any level of lighting and special effects your artwork requires.
Both Phantom Projectors and Linear LED Strip Lights are energy efficient and can be used throughout the night at minimal expense to one’s electrical bill. They are also dimmable, so you can accrue additional savings on power costs by turning the lighting levels down during events or when visitors are either absent or asleep.

Low Voltage Under Cabinet Lighting – Frequently Asked Questions
Low voltage under cabinet lights manufactured by Phantom are ideal for cost-conscious clients because they are innately power saving in nature and aesthetically superior due to their ease of concealment.
The following are some frequently asked questions our Agents normally receive in regards to 12v under cabinet lights.
We have a lot of clients who request low voltage puck lights or fluorescent under cabinet lights specifically. How can we propose Phantom as an alternative?
The key selling point would be the angle of lighting incident and the ease of concealment. Fluorescent lights shine forward and often send light straight into the eyes. Phantom lighting strips direct the light backward.
Our smaller magnetic transformers also make for easy installation and concealment, so they are much less visible than obtrusive puck lighting fixtures.
If concerns over quality are raised, please refer to any number of technical documents that indicate how low voltage LED festoon replacement lamps are equivalent in energy consciousness to fluorescents and just as effective, if not superior, sources of light.
What do you recommend as low voltage under cabinet lights in residential kitchens?
That depends on the warmth of the color scheme. As a general rule, it is best to light cooler colors with cooler colour temperatures, and to light warmer colors with warmer colour temperatures.
Incandescent light works best with cooler colors, whereas xenon works ideally with bright and/or warm colors.
You can really impress your prospective clients with custom marble and granite counter tops with a low voltage under cabinet lighting strip fitted with xenon festoons.
In commercial break room kitchens, you can install low voltage lights to replace the uncomfortable glare of fluorescents and maintain energy savings for your corporate clients. They will appreciate you greatly for making their in-house dining area more attractive to employees who are typically late getting back to work when they leave the building for lunch.
Does Phantom sell puck lights?
No, but we are willing to recommend some online sources. We also readily admit that there are times when puck lights do the job best. This is normally when are no reflective metal surfaces directly under the cabinet. Puck lights also work better under very large cabinets. This prevents the circle of light they create from appearing larger than the cabinet itself.
For smaller cabinets, or for cabinets that have metal appliances directly beneath them, consider low voltage kitchen cabinet lights by Phantom. As we have previously noted, our lamps point back toward the wall and direct the light away from any highly reflective, large appliance positioned directly beneath them.
Are Phantom strip lights dimmable?
Yes. Extremely cost-sensitive clients are often sold on this point alone. They like the fact that Phantom lighting used with Lutron dimmers give them direct control of how brightly the light shines and how much voltage it uses.
Does Phantom provide any special technology that can give our company a competitive edge against other firms?
We have the most sophisticated LED festoon lamps in the world, and we actually hold patents on their design. LED bulbs on any lighting system will require only 20% the electricity required by incandescent and xenon bulbs. When you subsequently install LED festoons on a low voltage, 12v under cabinet light fixture, the power savings are further multiplied to the client’s maximum advantage.
Our lamps output 50 lumens of light per unit—the highest output of any LED festoon on the market. We also can fit low voltage LED under cabinet lights with your client’s choice of five colour temperatures which range from white, functional light to specialty, colored lighting for decorative displays and showcases. This makes them equivalent to xenon in aesthetics at significantly less expense.
