Designing Adjustable Cabinet Lights
If you are building cabinets with adjustable shelves mounted on metal brackets, Phantom Lighting offers you the option of building custom display cabinet lights right into the shelving at the time of construction. These linear fixtures are low-voltage units designed for maximum light output and minimal power consumption. With color temperatures ranging from 3500K-2800K, they are guaranteed to accentuate your product’s aesthetic and directly increase its market value. With the energy efficiency generated by Phantom LED cabinet lights, you can offer to reduce your clients’ decorative lighting costs by as much as 60%. When you combine this type of savings with superb carpentry and high-end lighting, you add return on investment value to product quality and increase the selling power of your bid with some of the most ingenious technology ever introduced to the world of cabinet lighting.
In spite of its highly flexible nature and diverse range of application, the Phantom adjustable shelf cabinet lighting system consists of some amazingly simple components. These are the cabinet lights themselves, a CDA kit for each linear strip, a pair of bus bars, and a small, low-voltage transformer that is easy to conceal.
The CDA kit replaces the standard metal shelf brackets with a pair of highly conductive brass shelf supports and corresponding brass contact pads. The bus bars are vertical metal strips that are mounted flush within the interior walls of the cabinet. When a cabinet maker contacts our factory and places a purchase order, both the bus bars and the cabinet lights themselves are custom built to match the dimensions of the structure’s interior.
Each cabinet lighting installation requires only one pair of bus bars per section, and each linear strip light requires only one corresponding CDA kit per shelf. These components, along with a small, low-voltage transformer that is easy to conceal, are all that is necessary to create a completely hidden light, wireless light source that will illuminate everything from rare books and antique china to sentimental curios and fine bottles of wine.
Installing your low voltage lighting strips is a simple process that takes only a few minutes to complete. Begin by routing out a 1/4” channel on each interior wall of the cabinet. Route this channel directly at the point where you intend to mount the metal shelf brackets. Install the bus bar in this channel flush with the surface of the wall. Then, use the screws in the CDA kit to affix the shelf brackets directly to the bus bars at whatever height you wish to place the shelves. The bus bars have plenty of screw holes, so you can create all sorts of display options for your clients simply by moving a pair of brackets up or down.
One the shelf brackets are in place, attach the brass contact pads in your CDA kit to the ends of each shelf. Install the cabinet lighting fixtures behind the front reveal of every shelf, and then connect them to the contact pads with the small wires that come with the CDA kit. (You do not need an electrician to do this). Now, when the shelf is placed on the bracket, the power will flow from the bus bars through the mounting bracket, then complete circuit through the contact pads connected to the lighting strips.
If you are a lighting designer, these wireless cabinet AE Series lights can help tip the scales in favor of your proposal with any client who wishes to showcase something special in his or her home or office. If you are a private collector, or simply a homeowner looking to enliven the living room with a new level of light, you can upgrade from outdated and inefficient battery lights to LED wireless cabinet lights that will save on power and provide you with any desired lighting effect you can imagine…at a fraction of the cost of incandescent bulbs or batteries that have to be replaced on an ongoing basis.

Lighting Antique Corner Cabinets
Corner cabinet lighting can present some unique challenges to the carpenter and the designer. On an aesthetic level, one has to precisely match the color temperature of the light to the contents on display to most appropriately showcase their color and form. On a functional level, the designer must select corner cabinet lights that offer some means of controlling heat buildup within the cabinet interior, or install a light source that will produce less heat without sacrificing lighting levels or lighting quality. To better understand how the present generation of corner cabinet lights evolved in the first place, we need to take a look at back in history. In the very beginning, there were only incandescent lights. Corner cabinets were originally built with hand soldered incandescent lighting strips built into the displays themselves. Incandescent was and still is the closest match to natural sunlight, so early corner cabinet lighting solutions produced a luminance that was incredibly “golden” in tone and ideal for lighting fine antiques and rare collectibles. However, these lights produced considerable heat output that was further magnified by glass door enclosure. Also, incandescents only lasted for a short period of time. Even to this day, incandescent bulbs of any kind suffer from the shortest lamp life on the market.
To create a light source with longer lamp life, cabinet lighting manufacturers began to develop a new, hybrid form of incandescent light called xenon. They also developed dimmer controls that would allow display owners to raise and lower lighting levels at will. Xenon still had the slightly golden appearance of incandescent lights, only with a slightly lighter, whiter tone. It quickly became the new standard in custom cabinet furniture lighting, and the new technology of the dimmer control allowed for forward throw heat to be directly controlled for the first time. The only disadvantage to this, however, was that reducing heat meant reducing the level of light. For some very elaborate antique and collectible displays, this meant creating too much darkness for maximum aesthetic.
The ultimate solution to all of these concerns came with the most recent development in corner cabinet lighting-- LED technology. LED allows us now to create much higher lighting levels with less heat. The patent pending Phantom LED festoon lamp, for example, is a 1.7 watt unit that emits the equivalent of 5 watt xenon bulb. However, the heat generated in the production of light is dissipated by a heat sink that draws heat away from the cabinet interior. Additional benefits of LED technology are the longest lamp life of any light source and a power consumption of only 20%-40% that of previous technologies.
Ranging in terms of the warmest to coolest, LED festoons are available in color temperatures 2800K, 2950K and 5000K. Of course, Phantom has a policy never to limit the choices of our clients for display cabinet lighting. Some decorators have already determined specific ambient qualities they wish to create that require xenon or incandescent strip lights. For such clients, we recommend the use of dimmer controls to control heat, and we also suggest that lights be turned off for periods of time. Also, our engineers strongly recommend that for lighting closed corner cabinets with glass doors, one should use xenon bulbs rated at 3 or 5 watts. Anything more than that will generate too much heat buildup to effectively control without sacrificing luminance and aesthetics.
Our home lighting manufacturing facility is located in Houston, Texas, which in turn distributes these specialty linear lights through a nationwide network of lighting supply channels, distributorships, and sales agents in cities such as Rhinelander, WI (RHI), Yakima, WA (YKM), Windsor Locks, CT (BDL), Mason City, IA (MCW), Sault Ste Marie, MI (CIU), Binghamton, NY (BGM), Lawton, OK (LAW), Pasco, WA (PSC), St Cloud, MN (STC), and Hyannis, MA (HYA). Low Voltage Cabinet Lighting Fixtures
Meeting commercial expectations requires a constant awareness of the bottom line. Because many commercial environments such as break rooms need the lights left on throughout the day, owners are very tempted to request fluorescent under cabinet lights that are adequate in luminance and cheap to operate. You might want to point out to these clients that custom low voltage under cabinet lighting strips can be just as cost effective and prove an equally effective source of light. Low voltage incandescent festoons make for excellent task lights and produce a much finer, whiter light that compliments almost any countertop.Phantom Xenon linear strip lights are low profile fixtures that hide beneath the front of the cabinet’s underbelly, shining the light back and away from the eyes. This reduces uncomfortable, reflective glare. They are also completely dimmable, which makes them even more effective than fluorescents in controlling energy costs. Because these devices replace visible wiring with metal shelf supports and buss bars, cleaning crews can remove shelves to dust them without fear of damaging the lighting strips or shocking themselves. Our smaller magnetic cabinet lighting transformers also make for easy installation and concealment, so the light appears to be sourceless as it emanates from under the cabinet or from within its interior.
Phantom linear light strips for low voltage under cabinet lighting are custom made to the exact specifications of cabinet undersurfaces and cabinet interiors. Installation will be simple and without unforeseen complications when you work with a US Phantom Lighting sales representative. Your Agent will relay the vertical and horizontal length requirements of the linear strips you request to our manufacturing facility. This will ensure a seamless fit with no complications.
Business owners will not only be amazed at the apparently magical light produced by our low voltage cabinet lights, but they will be impressed with the savings, to say the least. Low voltage lighting strips combine optimal lumens output with maximum energy savings. New 2800K LED festoon light bulbs have just emerged on the market as well. These new lamps mimic the color renderings of incandescent light and operate on only 20% the power needed by incandescents and xenon lamps. Add the innate power savings of LED to a dimmable, concealable light source, and you have low voltage under cabinet lighting exponentially multiplied through engineering combined with user-friendly control.
Through a partnership with Phantom Lighting, you can pass on direct savings to your clients, and you can also accommodate them with user friendliness and a wide variety of lamping and color temperature options that can make low voltage under cabinet light installations a source of premier luxury lighting at only a fraction of standard lighting costs.

Kitchen Cabinet Lighting
How decorative do kitchen cabinet lights need to be?Kitchens today are much more than food storage and preparation areas. They are now central gathering places for home entertainment events and are much larger than ever before. Kitchen cabinet lighting has had to evolve over the years to meet and increasing demand for more than base-level requirements to produce optimal visibility and comfort. Custom cabinet lighting must address certain aesthetic concerns as well such as lighting color and brightness, color rendering of illuminated surface and interior design, and glare free light that will not hurt the eyes of homeowners and guests.
Do you recommend puck lights and fluorescent under cabinet lights?
In some situations they are still useful, but their dominance in kitchen cabinet lighting is beginning to significantly wane. Custom home owners are replacing generic countertop materials with ornate granite and marble—two surfaces that are highly reflective. Although most fluorescent undercabinet lights are housed in frosted fixtures that minimize glare, they lack the color rendering capabilities necessary to do justice to an ornate countertop. Puck lights are too intense for most kitchens and throw a great deal of reflected light outward in all directions.
12 volt undercabinet lights, such as those manufactured by Phantom Lighting, are designed to overcome reflected glare with proprietary shielding on the linear light strips themselves and with directional lighting control that aims the light back and away from the eyes of the viewer.
What types of bulbs can you install in kitchen cabinet lights?
Phantom strips can be fitted festoon lamps housing incandescent, xenon, or LED bulb. Xenon will render color at a level nearly equivalent to sunlight. As a low voltage, dimmable cabinet light fixture, it will bring out the subtlest red of granite and the multi-dimensional hues of marble, and until very recently was the most commonly used festoon in custom kitchen cabinet lighting. However, the new 2800K LED festoon lamps has just entered the market with a color rendering capability that is equivalent to xenon—at only a fraction of the cost.
What types of festoons are best for interior shelf lighting?
Incandescent festoons typically make for the best kitchen cabinet lighting installations. This is because they produce a very white light everything within the interior clearly visible. Unlike puck lights, they occupy no cubic space, leaving more room for storage and a more balanced presentation when the cabinet is opened in front of guests. It is also easier to clean the shelves periodically because Phantom low voltage in cabinet lighting require little external wiring and even allow for shelf removal without risk of shock or equipment damage.

Cabinet Lighting Fixtures
Phantom cabinet light fixtures feature a low voltage transformer that is smaller than industry standard size and much easier to conceal. This enables builders and contractors to install our cabinet light fixtures to be used inside cabinets of any size. Phantom cabinet light fixtures are available in vertical mount and horizontal mount designs to enable custom cabinet lighting in any environment. These lights are a preferred source of illumination in places where an evenly distributed, bright, and glare free light are an absolute necessity. Contractors find our display lighting fixtures ideal for such places as kitchens, bathrooms, storage cabinets in workstations, and special displays in certain retail and public showcasing environments.Phantom linear cabinet light fixtures feature some very unique, proprietary, and patented technology. Our engineers have developed a wireless method of conductivity that eliminates the need for visible wiring and uses metal shelf standards to send current to the lamps. The linear strip light fixtures themselves are slim and low profile, and any number of festoon options are available. Each cabinet lighting fixture is custom made to the exact vertical or horizontal dimensions of the mounting surface, and dimmer controls on the concealed transformer allow the user to select any number of lighting levels and effects.
Under Cabinet Lighting Fixtures
Phantom 12 volt under cabinet light fixtures are a favored source of under cabinet lighting for these reasons. Additionally, contractors often prefer Phantom linear strips fort their superior abilities at reducing reflective glare off of counter top surfaces. Puck lights mount in the center of the cabinet underbelly and tend to create white spots on the counter below. The larger fluorescent under cabinet light fixtures mount toward the back of the cabinet, creating the undesirable effect of throwing light straight into a person’s eyes. However, Phantom xenon linear lighting strips for under cabinet lighting mount just beneath the front of the cabinet and direct the light at an angle of incidence away from the viewer’s eyes, back toward the wall. This creates a smooth, even distribution of light that can be fine tuned even further with user friendly dimming controls on the unit. This is probably why we are now experiencing such an influx of orders from commercial contractors through our US and Canadian lighting sales agent network.
If cost is an issue, these linear strips can be made to pay for themselves over time. Any under the cabinet lighting fixture we manufacture can be ordered from our factory as a 12V linear strip and fitted with incandescent, xenon, or LED festoon lamps. This allows the contractor to match the countertop and surrounding kitchen decorations to the optimal light source and color rendering needed for best results. Combined with a 12V transformer fitted with a dimmer switch the homeowner can adjust at will, even the most sophisticated xenon lamps now save power at an extraordinary level. Businesses seeking LEED certification can also replace fluorescent pucks and strip lights with Phantom LED strip light fixtures. Unlike competing festoons, our patented lamping design generates 50 lumens per lumen on an LED strip light, making it nearly equivalent to xenon and far more of an energy saver at the end of the day.

Phantom Shelf Lighting puts books and collectibles in a whole new, superior light.
There are a number of things you should keep in mind when searching online through the seemingly endless number of shelf lighting options today’s market offers. Keeping a few rules of thumb in mind will not only help you select optical shelf lights for your particular display, but also lead you to the conclusion that efficiency and innovation are the keys to putting your collectibles, rare books, and even retail merchandise into a whole new, superior realm of impeccable light. LED Shelf lights should always evenly distribute illumination within the enclosed space of a bookshelf, display case, or specialty furniture piece. The light should never "spill" too far outward into the room. In shelf lighting, self-containment and a less is more approach to equipment are the two keys to glare free radiance and specialty effects that highlight and accentuate.Shelf lights need to conserve power and in certain cases minimize heat. Ideally they should offer both low-voltage fixture options and dimmable lamping capability. At the same time, they must be bright enough to render colors accurately and accent the displayed objects with both required and optional lighting effects. Most importantly, shelf lighting achieves maximum aesthetic results when the equipment itself remains concealed, so that viewers only sees the contents under display highlighted by ambient combinations of luminosity and appropriate degrees of coloration.
Phantom’s series of specialized strip lighting fixtures fulfills all of these requirements with exceptional display and showcase lighting. Phantom strips eliminate wires as conductors by using existing metal shelf standards to power small lamps embedded in the surface of the strip fixture itself and with remote low voltage transformers. Phantom offers four major lamping options to cover the full gamut of both retail and in-home shelf lighting needs.
Read our full-length informative article on showcase shelf lighting and study our product specifications now to learn more about each of the specific bulb types and fixture designs we offer, and which of our Phantom strip lights will best place your fine books and collectibles on display in a whole new, superior light….
