Phantom Projector Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I use the Contour Projector instead of a low voltage pinhole light?
The primary reason to use a framing projector is to shape the light exactly to the contour of the object of art without illuminating the wall or floor around it. This is done with one of two masking methods: Adjustable shutters or custom cut templates. The art takes on a three-dimensional, lighted from within look, which is spectacular in the right environment. Framing projectors are considered the most dramatic form of art illumination on the market today!

How does the Phantom Contour Projector compare with the Wendelighting® optical projector?
The two projectors are very similar in optical design except for the light source, housings and mounting techniques. Utilizing a 75-Watt MR16 lamp our custom lenses collect, condense and focus the light to levels exceeding the 150-Watt lamp used in the Wendelighting® optical projector. This has allowed us to reduce the size of the housings by 50% and design five different mounting methods to handle any installation condition. The remodel housing, a first in the industry, if perfect for applications where drywall repairs are not practical or desired.

Will the light from the Phantom Contour Projector fade my art?
No, almost all of the infrared heat is contained within the projector itself. Most of the ultraviolet light is filtered out as it goes through the lens. Special UV filters are available by request for sensitive pieces of art.

How difficult is Phantom Contour Projector to install?
It is really quite simple if you understand the concept and follow the instructions. Selecting the right housing and focal lenses is the most important part of the installation. Send us some drawings or a picture and we will be able to discuss your needs!

What kind of dimmer should I use to control the Phantom Contour Projector?
We recommend that you use a dimmer that is designed to control an electronic transformer. Some dimming systems such as Lutron Grafik Eye may require the use of an electronic interface. Consult the manufacturer or you local lighting professional for information regarding dimmer controls. We now offer Q-Tran magnetic transformers on all our projector models.

About Phantom Lighting Systems

Phantom Lighting is a pioneer, Houston-based art lighting company and low voltage lighting manufacturer established in 1981 to service the lighting and design community. Phantom Contour Projector and Phantom strip lights feature lighting technology that is completely unique, 100% proprietary, and found nowhere else in the world of lighting. Phantom’s revolutionary approach to decorative picture lighting and low voltage display, shelf, and under cabinet lighting has taken it from humble origins to the level of an international leader in lighting manufacturing on two continents. We offer two unique products: Phantom Contour Art Lighting Projectors and Phantom LED and Xenon Linear Strip Lighting.

Phantom Contour Art Lighting Projectors
Phantom art lighting museum projectors feature ideal optics and photometric capabilities ideally suited to fine art illumination. These low voltage lighting projectors feature halogen light fixtures and produce a very unique quality of luminance called “the lighted from within effect.” Phantom recessed picture lights are easy to install and extremely versatile, because of their small, compact size and small ceiling aperture.

The Phantom Projector incorporates a parabolic aluminized reflector 75MR16/FO halogen based lamp in its design compared to other projectors. These lamps were originally used for the fiber optic industry, where detailed light focusing is required. The typical rated life of this lamp is around 4000 hours, giving the enthusiast of exquisite paintings plenty of time to enjoy their precious piece, before having to replace the bulb. The surface mount projector is the ideal choice for lighting any type of fine art. This adjustable framing projector has a sleek design, which is unobtrusive and perfect for accenting brush stroke details, along with other vital elements of your paintings. The design of Phantom art projector lights will ensure that your frames are pampered, so they are not damaged.

Phantom Linear Strip Lighting
Phantom LED strip lighting replaces soon-to-be antiquated lighting sources of fluorescent and halogen light bulbs. Phantom strip lights utilize LED lamps that employ semiconductor technology to generate illumination. This reduces the risk of fire hazards that result from overheated lighting equipment and cuts cost on energy consumption. Phantom LED strip lighting delivers value to both commercial and residential lighting arenas and is sweeping the technology world as the wave of the future.

The most popular application for xenon linear lighting is under cabinet lighting. This is due to xenon’s ability to render both cool and warm colors with equal depth and distinction. Incandescent lighting also has a high CRI (color rendering index) when it comes to lighting cool colors such as white or off white counter tops. However, for the deep blues and reds commonly seen in today’s marble and granite counter tops, a more robust source of lighting like that produced with xenon festoons is preferable. Both granite and marble are hard composite stones with multiple layers of vibrantly colored minerals embedded in their substance. Xenon linear under cabinet lights produce enough light to clearly illuminate the many complex colors and patterns in the stone while at the same time adding something of a three-dimensional look to the counter top. By extending the “depth” of the surface, reflective glare is minimized, making for a more sheik and refined appearance appropriate to today’s larger, more elaborate custom kitchen and bathroom décor.

Professional Lighting Equipment

What options does Phantom’s Professional Lighting Equipment offer to builders, electrical contractors, and lighting designers?
Phantom’s professional lighting equipment can be customized to any number of commercial and residential marketplaces. Our equipment must feature specification grade design that ensures reliable performance and cost effective energy management, and it is user-friendly enough for the client to manipulate when necessary. Through our Agent network the contractor can obtain a variety of linear lighting products and projector lighting solutions to meet the complex demands of a challenging marketplace.

Does Phantom Lighting make cove lights?
Yes. The Phantom CM series is designed to bend a full 360 degrees if necessary to accommodate any radius, or wind along any varying angle to accommodate a serpentine cove. Standard cove lights have limited applications in these environments because of their fixed linear build. CM series cove lighting fixtures feature a compact design that hides it from the viewer’s eye and uses smaller transformers that are easier to conceal.

Does Phantom Lighting manufacture cabinet lighting fixtures?
Yes. Our professional lighting equipment intended specifically for cabinet lighting can be used for under cabinet, in-cabinet, and over the cabinet lighting. Both horizontal and vertical mount lighting strips are available for these applications. Builders can choose from lamping types that include incandescent, xenon, and LED in a complete spectrum of colour temperatures that will match luminance precisely to custom cabinetry and counter top color and texture. (Be sure to read about our latest development, the 2800K festoon lamp, as an example of this).

Does Phantom Lighting manufacture display lights?
Yes. Phantom specializes in overcoming the challenges of specialty display lighting with professional lighting equipment that is designed to hide its own physical presence within the shelving structure of display cabinets and utilize dimmable, sophisticated festoon lamping technology to showcase any variety of display items. Interior designers often use Phantom linear retail display lights to illuminate antiques, collectibles, and collectors’ firearms that require precise colour temperatures to showcase their true value. Professional lighting designers also prefer our equipment when illuminating items such as wine, rare books, and documents on display that require the totally heat less light source and the superior colour rendering of our 2500K LED festoon lamps.

Does Phantom make art lights?
Yes. Our Phantom Contour Projectors offer a low profile, art lighting fixture that mounts central to the room in the ceiling. The projector itself is smaller than competing models and is virtually invisible to the viewer’s normal line of site. No other form of professional art lighting equipment has proven so successful in minimizing glare and eliminating spill light. This is because Phantom’s proprietary engineering that focuses and shapes the light to the artwork in such a manner as to keep the beam itself invisible until it strikes the surface. This results in a magical “lighted from within” effect that causes the artwork to glow with an aura of seemingly sourceless light. Art consulting professionals use this art lighting equipment to create the most unique art lighting effects, including the illumination of statuary which requires a complex interplay of light and shadow to be effective, and which the Contour Projector is ideal for producing.

Hidden Lighting

Hidden lighting creates superior aesthetics and variety in high-end lighting applications. In fine art lighting, anything that distracts the eye will diminish the presentation, so hidden lighting is used focus the viewer’s attention onto the piece instead of itself. In display lighting, hidden fixtures are just as important to lighting rare furnishings and display cases used to house eclectic contents. Without a compact and concealed light source, space becomes limited, and visibility obscured by the fixtures and lighting controls.

Phantom Contour Projector
The Contour Projector gives the collector a truly hidden light in every since of the term. The beam emanating from its lens cannot be seen from any angle of the room, regardless of the position of the viewer. This is a major development in projector technology when comparing projector products. Previous, more primitive equivalents produced a “spotlight” effect, with a beam of light clearly visible to the viewer and excessive spill light that often overpowered the canvas or sculpture. A hidden light beam has both an aesthetic advantage and a technical advantage over this approach. Obviously, art work looks better when there is no visible fixture to clutter the view. More importantly, every work of art can be optimally showcased if the light beam is focused and shaped to fit its unique proportions, texture, color and style.

Phantom Projectors are able to create this effect by focusing white light from a halogen source and passing it through a series of adjustable filters. The filters are set to precisely match the dimensions of a painting or sculpture. When the hidden light from the Contour Projector strikes the art, it suddenly becomes visible as an ambient glow which is called “the lighted from within” effect.

Phantom Linear Strips
While many linear strips can be successfully concealed from the viewer’s line of sight, the equipment used to power them is often difficult to hide. Most hidden strip lights use bulky and cumbersome transformers that are all but impossible to keep out of sight. Wiring is another problem with some hidden lighting strips. Even if the strip itself is not visible, wiring can slip out of wherever they are tucked away and ruin a showcase or display. Truly elegant display lighting and showcase lighting require a hidden source of illumination that not only conceals the strip, but also the electrical components used to power the strip.

Phantom linear LED strip lights were engineered for the design contractor who found larger and more cumbersome pieces to be a frustrating encumbrance to the fine art of interior decorating. Phantom linear strips will work as hidden lights in any display cabinet, bookshelf, breakaway, showcase, cabinet, wine rack, or cove. The key to this diversity in application lies in their basic design. Phantom engineering eliminates visible wiring by conducting electricity along metal shelf standards. It is also powered by a transformer that is much smaller and therefore easier to conceal than those of other strip lights. Perhaps more importantly, each linear light strip is custom manufactured to the precise dimensions of the case, display, rack, or furnishing for which it is intended. This creates a much more seamless and integrated installation of the fixture into its surrounding and hides the light source so effectively that cabinet and display interiors appear to glow with a luminance of their own.

See the Light, Not the Fixture!
This has been our motto from the founding our organization and it summarizes in one sentence the entire purpose of our fine art lighting and display lighting fixtures. With customization and concealment available throughout network of Agents, professional designers, builders, architects, and individual end users can showcase their collections of artwork, collectibles, fine wine, collector’s firearms, private libraries, and even merchandise with our custom hidden lighting products.

Custom Products and Services for Businesses and Homes
In a world of lighting manufacturers who market similar products with cliché claims to fame, Phantom Lighting stands above its competitors as a Promethean source of new light. With proprietary technology that can be adapted to any art lighting or display lighting environment, Phantom technology represents a marriage of aesthetics and science has made Phantom Lighting a leader in lighting creation that enlightens the mind as much as it enlightens the room.

A wealth of information is available here on our website in the form of informative articles, technical lighting blog, brochures, testimonials, resources, and press releases. Fine Art Lighting

It is important to realize however, that any portrait or painting can never stand on its own. Every masterpiece requires the proper type of fine art lighting in order to be displayed with museum quality. Fine art lights are specifically designed for this person, and they differ greatly in size and luminance capacity from general lighting fixtures and purely utilitarian task lights. Fine art lights are manufactured in a wide range of fixture styles, lamping options, and material builds. These options range on the low end to simple battery powered cordless picture lights to ultra-sophisticated fine art lighting projectors. Efficiency ranges just as widely from the low end to the high end of the spectrum, and some fine art lighting fixtures are really should not be used at all other than general print lighting or photography lighting in public events. We will see why in the moment.

Why can we not hang paintings in windowed rooms and allow natural sunlight to illuminate fine art?
Because sunlight is the worst possible source of fine art lighting. In spite of the fat that it is the light we all live in daily, and the light by which we see the beauty and the many forms and colors of nature, sunlight contains an invisible enemies that can damage human skin if you stay out in the sun for too long—ultraviolet light. Reason tells us that if UV radiation can sunburn our skin, sensitive oils and canvases will suffer an even more severe outcome if they hang for any length of time in a beam of sunlight.

Infrared light is also part of the natural lighting spectrum, and although not as dangerous to humans as UV light, nevertheless has its own deleterious effects on canvas and oils. Infrared light waves are very hot and will dry out the oil and cause it to crack over time.

So what about the universal image of the Renaissance painter sitting by an Italian river, paintbrush in hand, as the sun streams down to light his canvas?

It makes for an excellent painting, provided it is kept out of the sun and showcased under fine art accent lighting fixtures design to preserve it in the annals of myth and symbol as a representative symbol of enlightenment and virtue…not the way painters of the time actually worked.

Do incandescent lamps make good fine art light sources?
Yes and no. For warm colors, such as red, orange, yellow, and brown, incandescent lamps are excellent sources. However, incandescent picture lights have the opposite effects on cooler colors such as blue, green, and violet. They appear flat with this type of illumination.

If you are new to fine art collecting, and you are looking to purchase fine art lights for the first time, we recommend you think twice about incandescent because they will more than likely be forced out by legislation just as they recently were in California.

Can energy saving fluorescent be used for fine art lighting?
We do not recommend this. While larger commercial fluorescent lights rank very high on the CRI (color rendering index), smaller lamps with internal ballasts render only a portion of the spectrum, making them unsuitable for the color palette. Even more serious is the fact that fluorescent produce ultraviolet rays just as the sun does, and they too will destroy any paintings they illuminate.

Is halogen lighting a good source for showcasing art?
Actually, it is the best. Halogen low voltage fixtures produce a strong white light, and they bring out many different colors across the color spectrum. New technology has invented low wattage based halogen bulbs, which deflect damaging UV and infrared rays. Halogen bulbs typically come in line voltage (120 V) and low voltage (12 V). This is why halogen lights are the favored lamping option for fine art projector lighting.

Phantom Fine Art Lighting Projectors
Phantom Contour Projectors feature ideal optics and photometric data for your fine art lighting needs. These projectors feature halogen light fixtures and produce a very unique quality of luminance called “the lighted from within effect.” Phantom fine are lighting projectors are easy to install and extremely versatile, because of their small, compact size and no exposed wiring.

This fine art illumination device incorporates a parabolic aluminized reflector or PAR (MR-16) 75-watt halogen based lamp in its design. These lamps were originally used for the fiber optic industry, where detailed light focusing is required. The typical rated life of this lamp is around 4000 hours, giving the enthusiast of exquisite paintings plenty of time to enjoy their precious piece, before having to replace the bulb. The SM or surface mount series is the ideal choice for any type of fine art lighting. This adjustable projector has a sleek design, which is unobtrusive and perfect for accenting brush stroke details, along with other vital elements of your paintings. The design of Phantom projector fixtures will ensure that your frames are pampered, so they are not damaged.

Art Lighting Fixtures & Picture Lighting Techniques for Galleries, Fine Art Collectors and Museums.

What makes art lighting fixtures different from other types of lighting?
Art lighting fixtures come in a variety of design types, each of which offers scores of individual models and lighting controls from which you can choose. Art lighting fixtures have to matched to both the type and genre of artwork they illuminate, and they have to aesthetically compliment the interior design of the home, office, or gallery surrounding the art. Some are made to be visible, yet attractive; others are made to minimize or conceal their appearance altogether so that you see the light and not the fixture.

What are the least expensive art lighting fixtures I can use?
Picture lights attach to the top of the frame and cast direct lighting downward across the surface of the image. These convenient art lighting fixtures evenly distribute illumination across the surface of the image, bringing out the details of texture, color, and subtle interplays of light and shadow. Due to their close proximity to the image, however, they can damage sensitive oils and canvases common in rare originals and extremely fine art. In such instances, it may be to choose a different fixture type altogether for your art, or to substitute over the picture lights fitted with LED lamps. These lamps use less electricity and emit wavelengths of light that are minimal in forward throw heat and completely free of ultraviolet radiation.

What lighting fixtures are good for illuminating multiple works of art?
Track lights are ideal for arenas where a large number of works in a collection are on display. A track lighting installation consists art lighting fixtures that hang suspended from a rail, or “track” as it is called, that runs near the ceiling parallel to the wall.

Track lights are often the preferred art lighting fixtures of high-end art gallery lighting. Most photography showings consist of a series of images displayed as a thematically representative group. A single track light can be pointed toward a single photograph, placing each piece in its own individual light. They also work very well in contemporary or ultra-modern interior lighting design.

Track lights sometimes lack the ability to pin spot exceptionally small canvases and sculptures, and even though they can be controlled with dimmer switches to create different levels of light, they are nonetheless limited in their capacity to achieve highly customized lighting effects.

Are their art lighting fixtures that you can conceal from normal viewing angles?
Yes. You can use recessed art lighting fixtures, accent lighting fixtures or framing projectors if you need a concealed source. This is also known as “sourceless” lighting and represents the most sophisticated form of illumination possible.

Recessed picture lights mount in the ceiling and direct light from an angle onto a piece. Recessed art light fixtures are commonly fitted with halogen bulbs renowned for their optimal color rendering capabilities and extremely bright light. For less sensitive works of art, such as black and white photography or lithographic prints, halogen recessed lights can be an ideal source of illumination. They work exceptionally well for lighting a small grouping of thematically connected photographs or prints.

For more sensitive oils and acrylics, recessed picture lighting fixtures must be fitted with special ultraviolet filters to prevent the light from degrading the materials and paints. This can be problematic even with the best of equipment, however, as some UV light may still reach the canvas and cause deterioration over time.

If you are in doubt and can afford to take no risks with the finest art you possess, consider the very wise investment in a framing projector. Give the artwork lighting experts at Phantom Lighting at call toll free at 800-863-1184 or click here to find a lighting agent in your part of the world.

Understanding the optical characteristics of the Phantom Contour Projector.

I am trying to understand how the Phantom Contour Projector technically works. Do you have a section or cut away illustration showing all the internal components of the lighting fixture, especially the lenses in the optical chamber? Thanks

The PHANTOM CONTOUR PROJECTOR utilizes a 75-watt MR16/FO lamp designed originally for the fiber optic industry. This lamp produces a 13mm diameter circle of light at the focal point roughly 40mm from the lamp. The highly concentrated halogen light then passes through a 13mm aperture basically removing any stray light created by the lamp reflector and redirecting it inside the projector housing.

This focused light then passes through two Pyrex glass condenser lenses. The first lens is a 60mm, 75fl BCX (bi-convex) lens. The second lens is a 60mm, 150fl PCX (plano-convex) lens. Both condenser lenses collect the light and magnify the intensity of the light as it travels through the condenser assembly.

After passing through the masking ring, which holds the shutters or confinement plate, the light is then reprocessed and distributed to the art by one or more 39mm, 75fl Pyrex glass focal lenses. The focal lenses are the one variable in the system that allow the installer to manipulate the beam of light from a spot to a flood. All other lenses are fixed. The lighting designers at Phantom Lighting System have been awarded a US PATENT for innovation and design.

Now you see why this type of equipment is so specialized and not marketed by every lighting manufacturer. Here at Phantom Lighting System, we are committed to producing only finest lighting instruments designed specifically for illuminating art. Check out our website at http://www.phantomlighting.com/ for more technical information of selecting focal lenses, determining where to mount the projector and photometric data.

Our lighting manufacturing plant is located in Houston, Texas with professional lighting sales agents located throughout the United States that enable us to service all 50 states including Washington DC, Nashville Tennessee, Las Vegas Nevada. Portland Oregon, Oklahoma City Oklahoma, Tucson Arizona, Long Beach California, Atlanta Georgia, and Los Angeles California.

If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact Tom Kretzschmar at 800-863-1184. Mr. Kretzschmar would be happy to answer any questions you have regarding the optical projector from Phantom Lighting System.

Selecting the right housing for your Phantom Contour Projector light.

I am interested in purchasing several of your Phantom Contour Projectors. However, I am confused by all the different housings that you offer. Which recessed model do I need for a clean ceiling appearance?

Thank you for your interest in our Phantom lighting projector. I am more than happy to discuss the various housings we offer and assist you in ordering the right fine art lighting equipment.

Basically, we have four different Phantom Contour Projector housings:

RM SERIES
The remodel housing is designed for adding the projector light without damage to the ceiling. For example, you can replace an old eyeball fixture or accent light with one of these housings. You simple enlarge the existing hole, remove the old recessed lighting fixture and install the new Phantom remodel housing. The remodel housing has a discrete round white ceiling plate with a 1/8" tapered beveled edge.

FF SERIES
The float finish housing is designed for the most attractive and discrete ceiling appearance. The 1/8" machined flange is securely attached to the ceiling during installation and then floated and textured and painted to match the ceiling. These trims can be wallpaper, faux painted or fabricated to match the ceiling finish.

TA SERIES
The top access housing is designed for commercial jobs or residences where is in not practical to install or service the light. This housing eliminates the need for scaffolding or man lifts to access the equipment. A special elongated trim is provided with the housing to finish off the ceiling penetration. Although convenient for tall ceilings, this particular housing is the most challenging when it comes to adjusting the projector.

NC SERIES
The new construction housing is designed for new work and old work if attic access is available. The housing comes with heavy duty fixture bars for installation during the framing stage. Just like the remodel housing the NC Series has the same discrete round white ceiling plate with a 1/8" tapered beveled edge.

The float finish housing is by far the most attractive and least obvious of the ceiling trims. If you go with the new construction housing or the remodeler housing, the ceiling plates look the same should you decide to add more in the future. Some people are funny about seeing ceiling plates and they tolerate speakers, smoke detectors and sprinkler heads. Ultimately, the decision is up to you. If it were my house, the FF Series is the way I would go.

How does the Wendelighting® optical projector compare to the Phantom Optical Contour Projector?

Lighting works of art is never an easy task even for design professionals. Optical framing projectors, such as the PHANTOM CONTOUR PROJECTOR, is one of a few specialty lighting fixtures that lighting designers, architects and art consultants use for these types of applications. This technology has been around for many years and was first introduced by an optical scientist named Rudolph Wendel. Mr. Wendel created this magical projector light which has thrilled art connoisseurs for years and was first used in the Louvre. Mr. Wendel's creation became the standard for fine art lighting worldwide.

Mr. Wendel's optical projector has evolved over the years and moved from an incandescent pre-focus light source to a 150-watt mini-can base halogen lamp. The halogen lamp produces a very white color of light that has good color rendering and is preferred by artists and collectors. Unfortunately, the halogen light source produces a tremendous amount of heat making the housing for the equipment large and bulky. Optically, the Wendelighting® optical projector is still the same today as it was when it was created by Rudolph Wendel. With changes in the energy code, advances in light sources and optical design, the Wendelighting® optical projector is being left behind by the Phantom Contour Projector

Today's standard for fine art illumination is the PHANTOM CONTOUR PROJECTOR. This high performance optical framing projector utilizes a very special 75-watt MR16 lamp that was originally designed for the fiber optic industry. Fitted inside a unique optical chamber the light is magnified and distributed through a series of lenses creating a very intense focused low voltage halogen light source. This focused light is projected onto the art and then shaped to fit the exact contour of the object, regardless of the size, creating a lighted from with look. This is done with either a basic shuttering system or a custom metal confinement plate to mask the light. It is even possible to illuminate more than one object individually, from one Phantom light by using a hand cut brass confinement plate. In fact, the Phantom Contour Project is so unique and so effective, it is was recently granted a US PATENT for innovation and design. The housing is half the size of the Wendelighting® optical projector housing and produces more light with less heat.
