Lighting Installations using the Phantom Contour Projector.

Phantom Projectors transform the science of lighting installation into the art of illumination. In the past, lighting installation professionals shied away from projectors that required complicated lens selection, large fixture enclosures, and the necessity to cut custom templates. Projectors had a bad reputation before Phantom Lighting entered the market. Now, however, our patented technology has changed the nature of fine art lighting, not only with proprietary lighting techniques, but also by improving process flow for lighting installation professionals. Our reputation continues to grow from coast to coast as more and more installers choose Phantom over every other form of fine art lighting projector because of its sophisticated delivery housed in robust, easy-to-install mountings.

Each lighting installation is a unique experience in customized environmental improvement. Art lighting, for example, requires precise angles to prevent glare and shadow. Most complications with traditional projectors result from the limitations innate within traditional fixtures and lenses that make it difficult to precisely adjust the optimal level of light. Phantom Projectors resolve these issues with sophisticated, highly flexible components that allow for precise beam placement and pinpoint photometric adjustment. In virtually every lighting installation, the Phantom projector will beam exactly the right amount of light onto the art or sculpture without excess spill light or diminishing shadows. To achieve this effect, the lighting installation team will first darken the room to replicate nighttime conditions. This is imperative to find the right levels of light required for the task. Installers then systematically work to position the lighting fixtures for precise beam spread and luminosity, producing the “lighting from within” effect for which Phantom Projectors have earned world renown.

While it is true that Phantom projectors are simple to install, we recommend that homeowners and curators hire professional lighting installation consultants to achieve optimal results. Damage often results from do-it-yourself attempts to mount projectors in rooms with tall ceilings. Placing the lighting fixture too close to the wall impairs the projector’s ability to properly aim. Builders and electricians, while technically skilled in electrical installation, often make this mistake unknowingly due to a lack of experience in fine art lighting. The fixture then requires relocation, and the ceiling has to be repaired at additional cost after the fact. Phantom lighting installation experts can prevent this needless expense by positioning the projector at the best possible location the first time. They then work systematically to achieve the proper beam spread that forms the foundation for any successful lighting installation. Because each job is a custom project, the lighting installation team will also draw upon a vast inventory of unique and specialized bulbs. With literally hundreds of options ranging in all sizes, shapes, and colors, lamp technology has evolved into not only a science, but also an art form unto itself. These factors converge like a beam of light onto the subject, creating the magical lighting effect that has remarkably differentiated Phantom products as one-of-a-kind to our industry.

Phantom professionals have made a career of fine art lighting. Throughout the Houston area, which serves as home to our corporate headquarters, the wealthiest art patrons and professional art galleries come to Phantom whenever they need cutting-edge technology applied with the subtle and classic grace of fine art. Call us today to see how we can light your world in a better, more convenient way.

Lighting fine art over a sofa without glare in your eyes.

I live in Mexico and recently purchased a new painting that I plan to install over my living room sofa. I would like to light it properly without blinding my family or friends who might be sitting on the sofa. Do you have any suggestions of who to call in Mexico?

One of the best ways to control spill light on the sofa is by using a light fixture that has a focused light source. Framing projectors, like the Contour Projector, produce a high intensity beam of light that can be shaped to fit the contour of the object. This technique eliminates all the light around the art on the wall and the sofa below.

You could also install a MR16 low voltage adjustable halogen accent light mounted above the sofa and out of the field of view. From a steep aiming angle there will be some light on the wall around the art without bothering anyone sitting on the sofa.

If you would like to learn more about lighting fine art using framing projects contact our Mexico Lighting Agent or a lighting designer in your area.

For our Latin American friends, we are currently in the process of creating a Spanish version of the Phantom Lighting website. In the meantime, if we can be of service, please contact customer serviceat 800-863-1184 for assistance in Spanish.

Sculpture and fine art lighting like you have never seen before (or after)!

Before
After

Lighting consultants, interior designers and fine art connoisseurs are always looking for the best way to properly illuminate sculptures and fine art. Particularly "one of a kind sculptures" and art that are three dimensional or irregular shaped. Fine art deserves fine lighting!

These before and after pictures clearly illustrate the unique properties of the phantom Contour Projector and how the light can be dramatically shaped to the exact contour of the sculpture. Note the intricate details of the sculpture and how the light meticuously outlines the art in a magical floating way. The installer selected the hand cut template method and tediously sculpted the light to illuminate the object. This was a complicated installation that required a professionals touch to achieve the desired results.

Picture lighting using MR16 accent lighting fixtures or optical framing projectors?

We are in the process of building a new home. The builder has suggested that I use MR16 accent lights to illuminate my artwork. I feel that a projector is more suitable for my needs. Do you have any information that I can provide to the builder to show him what I am talking about? Thanks.

We do a have a color catalog that illustrates the many ways a Contour Projector can be the most effective way to light your art. MR16 accent lights are some of the most widely used accent lights on the market. They are small, powerful and a very effective tool for lighting art. However, MR16 accent lights do not provide the control or sophistication that projectors do for lighting fine art.

The Contour projector is certainly a big step up from the MR16 lighting fixture. The internal lenses produce a focused light which can be shaped or masked to follow the exact contour of the art. That means only the canvas is lit without spill light on the wall. So, the object takes on a "lighted from within" look that is simply magical. The same is true for lighting sculptures!

Why don't you show your builder our projector comparison page to learn more about how we stack up against the competition. In the meantime, I will forward you a complete binder illustrating both our art lighting equipment as well as our low voltage shelf lighting system.

Lighting sculptures and three dimensional art is what the phantom light is all about.

We are often asked by our clients about lighting sculptures with the PHANTOM CONTOUR PROJECTOR. They want to know if it can be done, how it is done and how difficult is the process? What is a hand cut template anyway?

Frankly, shaping the light to fit the exact contour of a sculpture is one of the most challenging installations to master. It takes patience, determination and a desire to see the end result.

Hand cutting a brass slide to fit an intricate sculpture requires the right tools. A small set of jewelers files and sharp cutting scissors. The process is completely trial and error. That means it is not easy, but by no means impossible for a rookie. We have detailed TEMPLATE CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS to help guide you through the process.

The brass slide above was cut to light a wall hung Miro sculpture. A small vertical slot was cut in the slide to find the target and establish orientation. Then, using scissors, small triangular cuts were made on both sides in several locations to establish cutting references. Then the remaining brass removal was done with jewelers files to replicate the intricate details of the Miro sculpture. This was an eight hour project and required several attempts to get it right. Perhaps with the owner's permission, I will post the finished product in a subsequent blog.

Positioning of the light is critical to the process. Before installing the light it is a good idea to test how the light hits the sculpture and more importantly what shadows are created. The shadows are an indicator of what will have to be cut on the template to properly outline the sculpture in light. In some instances, the sculpture may have appendages or projections that are simply impossible to cut out. In that case, all you can do is outline the sculpture in a controlled pool of light. Others can simply be cut out to illuminate only the sculpture without light on the wall or pedestal. The results are stunning!

Fine art lighting with and without the Phantom contour projector.

We recently received some beautiful before and after digital images of an art lighting project using the contour light. The images really illustrate how beautiful a painting can look with the proper lighting and without. In this case, one PHANTOM CONTOUR PROJECTOR was mounted in the ceiling and adjusted to illuminate only the canvas of the art by adjusting the handy shutters. The entire project took the lighting technician roughly two hours from start to finish, excluding electrical to install the phantom light. By using the PHANTOM REMODEL HOUSING, the installer accomplished the installation without have to patch or paint the ceiling. The client was pleased and the art looks great! Thanks so much for sending the great pictures.

How do can I eliminate reflections and glare on my art from normal viewing angles?

I am trying to light an expensive oil painting that is installed above a fireplace in my study. I currently have an eyeball light that was installed by the builder that is horrible. The artist chose to seal the work with a varnish coat which reflects light. Since the art is installed above eye level, all I can see is glare when I view the art from my desk. Is there a light that won't reflect or some words of wisdom that you can share with me? The painting is very dark and must be lit to see the detail.

Unfortunately, glare is a very common problem when lighting art if the surface is reflective. There is a simple solution if you understand what is really happening. You have to understand that light travels in a straight line, as does the reflection. So it's not the light source, it the angle by which the light source is aimed. This is a phenomena called the angle of incidence, which is defined as the angle of incidence of a ray or beam is the angle measured from the ray to the surface normal. In other words, when light is pointed at a reflective surface the light or glare is reflected at the exact opposite angle.

By moving the light source forward or back, left or right you can redirect the glare out of your normal viewing angle. So if your viewing angle at your desk is left of the art, mount the projector to the left of your painting. Likewise, if your viewing angle at the desk is right of the art, mount the projector to the right of your painting. If you want proof or to test the theory, have someone hold up a flashlight from several angles while you are sitting at your desk. When the glare is squarely in your eyes, you are sitting in the angle of incidence.
One of the main advantages of the PHANTOM CONTOUR PROJECTOR is the ability to mount the light off center to deal with the angle of incidence. Since the Contour Projector produces a focused light source, it is still possible to mask the light to the exact contour of the object, even thought the light is off center. That means that you will not have unsitly shadows on the wall to contend with or reflective glare from the art.

For more information about dealing with glare or mounting postions for the PHANTOM CONTOUR PROJECTOR contact at Phantom Lighting System. We will respond to you in a timely manor and provide you the necessary information to illuminate your art. You can also contact us toll free at 800-863-1184 to discuss your project in detail.

Other than picture lights, what other light fixtures can you use to light fine art?

I am often asked, what is the best way to illuminate art? In my opinion, the Phantom Contour Projector is superior in performance and quality to other so called specialty lights in category of projector lights or picture lights, even the legendary Wendelighting® optical projector. When I light fine art, I use the Phantom Contour Projector whenever possible.

How art is illuminated is dependent on the subject matter, the room conditions and the type of art. Expensive works of art such as oil paintings, sculptures and antique furniture should be illuminated by a PHANTOM CONTOUR PROJECTOR. These high performance Phantom projector lights produce a focused beam of light that can be shaped to the exact contour of the object. This produces a "lighted from within" look unlike any other accent lighting fixture on the market. Unlike traditional picture lights or MR16 accent lights, the Phantom Light eliminates spill light that may be on the wall or floor around the object. This can be particularly important when displaying dark colored art on a light colored wall. It is now possible to enjoy the color, texture and form of the piece with proper accent lighting.

Phantom is a Houston based lighting manufacturer that was established in 1981 to service the lighting and design community. Over the years Phantom Lighting has enjoyed and earned a loyal following of satisfied customers and now our products are available nationally through traditional distribution channels and lighting representatives. Phantom Lighting specializes in high performance lighting products designed for low voltage adjustable lighting systems and precision optical framing projectors for the illumination of art.
