Phantom LED Festoon Lamps

When LED energy saving festoon lamps were invented just a few years ago, they changed decorative lighting forever. Up until this time, it was always something of an expensive chore to light ceiling, cabinets, bookshelves, and special displays with incandescent and xenon lamps. Any attempt to use cheaper lights like fluorescents in cove lighting yielded bright light but very little decorative ambience. It was always this tradeoff between quality and power savings.

Before LED festoon lamps, there was also another problem with heat. Incandescents produce a light that is very similar to that of the sun. They can also get very hot. The issue here is not so much one of fire hazard but rather overheating a room in general. The AC is going to kick in when the thermostat rises, and the cost of cooling the room down is going to compound on top of the cost it.

Linear lighting with 5-7 watt festoon lamps will overheat a room quickly. Just one watt of power emits 1 BTU in heat. Multiply that by 5 watts per lamp, and you can see how hot your room gets, and how much extra you have to pay to cool it down.

This all changed when LED festoons came on the scene. They made decorative lighting affordable. LEDs typically use 60% less electricity as incandescent lamps. However, heat was still an issue in spite of the power savings. While LED light bulbs did not produce heat, the printed circuit boards that power them do —even those with lamps of less than 5 watts of power.

However, things have changed again thanks to Phantom Lighting’s LED replacement festoon lamps. Each of these new lamps requires only .6 watt of power. This results in negligible heat output, which in turn offsets the cost of cooling a room. The savings curve is even greater, and the quality of the lighting is greater as well.

The new 6-emitter led lamp design emits plenty of light in a 120 degree pattern of distribution and a better blend of color temperature. Our lamps also emit 5 times the amount light as competing models. Phantom LEDs, you can have the same lumens output as incandescent and xenon without the additional costs.

Phantom LED cove lights are available in superb color temperatures of 3500K, cool white 5000K, and 2700K. They operate at a CRI of 80 and also have a 50,000 hour average lamp life. They can be retrofitted to linear strip lights made by almost any lighting manufacturer, and they can work on either 12V or 24V magnetic lighting transformers without any need to rewire your fixtures. This means you do not have to buy new strip lighting fixtures. You only need remove your original festoons and replace them with Phantom LED lamps to make the switch.

Phantom lights are ideal for under cabinet lighting, display cabinet lighting, and custom furniture lighting. They have also proven valuable in nautical lighting, aviation lighting, and under the adjustable shelf lighting applications.

LED Cove Lights & Cove Lighting

LED cove lights are highly decorative and have to be able to generate the ambient warmth associated with high-end linear lighting. When building cove lights they also have to be bright enough to effectively compliment general room lighting and contribute noticeable quality to the decorum of interior architecture.

Now when we talk about quality, we have to step back and identify the type of quality we are looking to define. Are we talking about the actual amount of light? Are we talking LED energy savings lamps? Is color rendering or color temperature our primary concern?

Each one of these variables represents a different set of considerations that go into selecting a light source. Historically, cove lights prior to LED have been based on the following technologies, all of which had their unique benefits.

     • Cold cathode and fluorescent lamps tended to produce the brightest light.
     • Incandescent lights known for their golden hue
     • Xenon lights used for high-quality lighting with a distinctively white color to their luminance

Although only capable of producing a pale bluish light in their early days, newer generations of LED linear lighting strips have now begun operating at color temperatures comparable to incandescent. People tend to judge the quality of a light by incandescent because this was the very first type of light invented, and it was used for most of the 20th century.

While it is true LEDs have grown competitively warm in color temperature, only Phantom cove LED accent lights now equal both the warmth and ambience of incandescent lights and the brightness of xenon lamps. The added advantage we offer an equally decorative and truly energy conscious solution that saves money and drastically slashes maintenance and replacement costs.

In fact, our level of quality has earned a reputation for warmth, mood, and ambience in the most high-end display, cabinet, and cove lighting applications. Our color temperatures (LED comparison chart) start from the very warm 2700K, which is virtually identical to incandescent, to the ultra-cool, contemporary 5000K.

The success of our Phantom LED lighting lies in the unique engineering of our festoon lamps. We do not use 5mm “toppled” LEDs like other linear strip light manufacturers use. Such a configuration never results in any more than 5 to maybe 10 lumens in the best of possible worlds.

On the other hand, Phantom LED cove lights have always output over 40 lumens per festoon—and this was with our original festoon design, which has now been redesigned for even greater performance!

Our first LED festoon lamps were comprised of 3 LEDs that operated at a combined 1.7 watts per lamp. We have since doubled the number of LEDs per lamp and simultaneously cut the wattage to only .6 watts. This has negated all but a trace amounts of heat produced by the circuits in the lamps themselves.

These new LED cove lights are a brighter source of light than ever, burn cooler than anything else on the market, and will last longer than anything you buy. Even better, you only need to buy the lamps—not the linear strips themselves. Our festoons are made to retrofit any existing cove lighting system operating at 12V or 24V.

Phantom Lighting is a pioneer, Houston-based art lighting supply company and low voltage cove lighting manufacturer established in 1980 to service the lighting and design community. Phantom Contour Projector and Phantom strip lights feature lighting technology that is completely unique, 100% proprietary, and found nowhere else in the world of lighting. LED Festoon Strip Lighting

Led light bulbs will one day become the dominant source of lighting on the planet—if not the exclusive source. They solve a multitude of economic and environmental problems that have plagued and continue to plague users of other types of lamps. The reason for this lies in the manner in which a led bulb generates light. Unlike incandescents and fluorescent bulbs, a led light does not utilize a filament or any type of luminary gas. Instead, led lighting bulb technology is based on something completely different—a semi conductive component known as a “diode.” By passing a low voltage current through a diode, one can agitate electrons within its composite substances, causing light to radiate into the surroundings. This light is cool burning and will not cause heat pollution in work and living areas. Because these LED light bulbs do not rely on inert gases of any kind, they pose no threat to the environment, and the substances of which they are composed are virtually unbreakable compared to standard lamps.

Festoon lamps are available in 3 watt, 5 watt, and 10 watt, in both 12VAC and 24VAC. Xenon lamps (2,800K) typically produce a whiter light and are used for display lighting. The light from an incandescent lamp (2,450K) is warmer in color, and more conducive to residential applications. The average life for a incandescent lamp is 7,500 hours and 20,000 hours for xenon low voltage lamps.

There are many advantages to LED lighting. LED festoon lamps are available in a 0.6 watt, 12VAC and 24VAC models in several popular color temperatures such as 2,700K, 3,500K, and 5,000K. LED festoon lamps produce very little forward throw heat, no UV rays and have an average lamp life of 50,000 hours.

LED 2,700K festoon lamps are perfect for retrofit applications or new projects that require a bright, efficient light source in hard to reach areas. Commercial applications such as LED cove lighting in hotels, casinos, theaters, and large residential cove lighting projects are all candidates for Phantom LED festoon light bulbs. Why replace your linear strip lights when you can simply install new energy efficient LED festoon lamps?

Our new 2,700K Phantom LED festoon lamp is a favorite of interior designers, architects, maintenance departments and electrical engineers because it produces a beautiful warm colored light that works well in indirect LED cove lights, display cabinets, task lights and many other commercial and residential applications.

LED Cove Lighting & Cove Lights

In the past, designers have shied away from LED cove lighting because of the low lumens output and poor color rendering that plagued previous LED technology. With the advent of Phantom LED festoon lamps, however, building cove lighting has evolved to entirely new heights. Our festoons output 45-50 lumens each, while operating at only 1.7 watts of power.

This allows LED replacement festoon lamps to effectively improve previous lamping technologies and offer builders, homeowners, and commercial property managers a cost effective, high end accent light source that is characterized by minimal energy use, low heat output, and exceptionally long lamp life that drives down the frequency and costs of lamp replacement.

There are two factors that contribute to making our cove LED accent lighting fixtures more energy efficient than incandescent or xenon equivalents. The first reason is the nature of LED bulbs themselves, which typically use anywhere from 60-80 percent less power than incandescent bulbs. The second factor that goes into our amazing energy savings comes from the proprietary design of the Phantom festoon lamp.

Phantom LED Lamps run on 12VAC and is built with three one-half-watt LED bulbs featuring tight color binning and a CRI of approximately 80. Standard beam spread is 120 degrees, but for special cove lighting applications, 60 degree beam spreads can be custom manufactured. All festoons are completely dimmable as well, giving the end-user control of both brightness levels and energy usage.

Another advantage our LED energy saving lamps offer is the minimal heat output that allows the fixtures to operate for longer periods of time and keeps room temperatures at a constant without inflating cooling costs. Our festoons are built with an integrated thermal design that dissipates heat on the back side of the circuit board.

Only a fractional amount of heat ever reaches the front of the lamp—roughly equivalent to that of a 1 watt incandescent. This combined with the unusually long lifespan of LED in general, gives our cove lighting lamps a 50,000 hour average lamp life when comparing LED lamps to other festoon light bulbs. This is more than twice that of xenon and approximately four times as long as incandescent.

The new generation of Phantom LED strip lighting now gives the interior decorator total wish fulfillment when it comes to accenting interior room color. A variety of color temperatures exist from which the interior designer can choose. Warm white 2950K, 3500K, 5000K, and daylight 6500K represent a full gamut of color temperature selectivity. For decorators looking for the closest approximation to xenon, the warm 2800K offers a robust accent light source that can compliment both residential and commercial venues.

CM series linear fixtures are just as versatile and unique as our festoon lamping design. All fixtures are custom-built to client specifications. Three custom trim profile options are available for the architect or builder to choose from, and eight popular painted colors guarantee a seamless blend with surroundings. Each trim option can be field cut or notched to achieve a radius or irregular shape. CM series fixtures make ideal accent lights for domed ceilings and serpentine coves.

Indirect Cove Lighting Designs

Cove lighting design adds dimension to interior architecture and design by adding a layer of accent lighting in otherwise unreachable places that function to blend general lighting with decorative lighting and fill the entirety of the room with a sense of luminary completion. Because lighting coves vary widely in depth and radius design, cove lighting requires a highly level of customization. Standard fixture designs prove inadequate on any but the most rigid and angular of surfaces. In a more sophisticated interior, xenon linear strips engineered to accommodate radial bends and narrow surfaces have to be used in order to conceal the light source and add mystique and ambiance to overall lighting design.

This allows the architect to focus on the structural designs of unique architectural elements without having to worry about what type of lighting he or she will later have to search for to illuminate the interior. With Phantom CM series kitchen cove lights, designers can simply submit a blueprint to our team and have our factory manufacture cove lights around the framework of the ceiling architecture. These strips can be made to fit radius bends of up to 360 degrees and remain completely concealed when installed. The resulting sourceless glow these cove lights produce allows building design professionals to apply some very unique attribution on a precision level to achieve any number of important accent and decorative strip lighting effects in key areas of commercial and residential structures.

Foyers, for instance, are intended to be more than simple entryways into an establishment. In a hospitality setting, they play an important role in establishing a sense of separation from the outside world. When guests walk into a foyer filled with ambient lighting, they immediately feel relaxed and welcome. LED strip cove lights in foyers can set the tone for an evening of fine dining, or a night in a well-furnished suite filled with amenity and charm. Equally important, cove lights in both hotels and restaurants can be used to initiate theme lighting designs. A recent project at Houston’s Aquarium restaurant features an installation of our CM linear lights along serpentine covers that wind along curving, fluid walls and ceilings built to mimic a sandy shoreline. Special 2800K LED lamps were used in these fixtures to mimic the color of sand.

In a troubled economy such theme accent lighting effects are remarkably cost effective when done with 2800K LED lamps. Already operating on a dimmable, low-voltage linear strip, these energy saving lamps further reduce costs by the simple virtue that they only need 20% of the power required by other luminaires in the first place. Restaurant cove lighting adds a very essential design element necessary to attracting repeat business at a negligible cost that is well worth the one-time investment in equipment.

Custom homes designed with visible trusses also experience a very powerful new dimension of lighting when lit from within by concealed cove lights or low voltage linear lighting systems. This serves to magnify the visibility of the beams without the visible presence of technology, and can be done in harmony with a number of decorative styles including rustic, Craftsman, or Arts and Crafts motifs.

Custom Cove Lighting Systems

Phantom linear cove lights offer architects and builders a flexible and multifunctional tool of ceiling accent lighting. Far more efficient and sophisticated than cove rope lights, linear strips feature longer lamp life and a greater range of colour temperatures. Many are also fully dimmable and capable of supporting a choice of lamp types including the new 2800K LED festoon cove lights that can equal the color rendering capabilities of xenon bulbs.

We patented our CM series linear strip to function as a template for high-end cove lighting applications in custom homes, hospitality industries, and elegant commercial interiors. This linear strip light is engineered for maximum concealment and flexibility, and can be fitted to even the most challenging ceiling environments. This is because of two very important reasons. The first is physical size. Phantom cove lights are smaller and thinner than most competing luxury lighting fixtures on the market. They are also engineered to be custom cut to fit any radius bend up to a full 360 degrees. This allows them to be installed in challenging environments such as serpentine coves and vaulted dome ceilings.

Another excellent advantage that Phantom cove lights offer is energy savings without compromise of lighting quality. Far more attractive than fluorescent equivalents, they are nonetheless competitively efficient due to their low-voltage engineering design and their fully dimmable lighting control mechanisms. Even greater cost savings can be instantly generating by having these fixtures manufactured with new 2800K LED festoons—a light source equivalent to xenon in color rendering capability. We see more and more restaurants and hotels choosing LED to save on energy costs and buffer their overhead against a sluggish market.

Residential home builders also becoming more interested in LED cove lighting construction for the very same reason. A new home today can be furnished and decorated with superb aesthetics that cove lighting plays an active role enhancing. Indirect decorative motifs appear more colorful and clear under the additional layer of accent lighting they create—at a negligible operating cost. Homeowners who have already purchased cove lights consider upgrading the festoon lamps in their fixtures to both reduce their electrical bills now and add value in the form of energy savings on the list price of their home.
