Phantom Projector Frequently Asked Questions
Why would I use the Contour Projector instead of a low voltage pinhole light? The primary reason to use a framing projector is to shape the light exactly to the contour of the object of art without illuminating the wall or floor around it. This is done with one of two masking methods: Adjustable shutters or custom cut templates. The art takes on a three-dimensional, lighted from within look, which is spectacular in the right environment. Framing projectors are considered the most dramatic form of art illumination on the market today!
How does the Phantom Contour Projector compare with the Wendelighting® optical projector?
The two projectors are very similar in optical design except for the light source, housings and mounting techniques. Utilizing a 75-Watt MR16 lamp our custom lenses collect, condense and focus the light to levels exceeding the 150-Watt lamp used in the Wendelighting® optical projector. This has allowed us to reduce the size of the housings by 50% and design five different mounting methods to handle any installation condition. The remodel housing, a first in the industry, if perfect for applications where drywall repairs are not practical or desired.
Will the light from the Phantom Contour Projector fade my art?
No, almost all of the infrared heat is contained within the projector itself. Most of the ultraviolet light is filtered out as it goes through the lens. Special UV filters are available by request for sensitive pieces of art.
How difficult is Phantom Contour Projector to install?
It is really quite simple if you understand the concept and follow the instructions. Selecting the right housing and focal lenses is the most important part of the installation. Send us some drawings or a picture and we will be able to discuss your needs!
What kind of dimmer should I use to control the Phantom Contour Projector?
We recommend that you use a dimmer that is designed to control an electronic transformer. Some dimming systems such as Lutron Grafik Eye may require the use of an electronic interface. Consult the manufacturer or you local lighting professional for information regarding dimmer controls. We now offer Q-Tran magnetic transformers on all our projector models.

Phantom Lighting Systems
What Makes Phantom Lighting Unique Among Lighting Fixture Manufacturers?Phantom Lighting is a unique light fixture manufacturer for a number of reasons. Instead of creating an inventory of generic products that contractors and end users must figure out how to apply to custom needs, Phantom takes a basic model fine art projector or linear lighting strip and customizes it to the environment and needs of the individual client. This allows contractors to specifically address the needs of the end user in a personal fashion, and it allows end users to call their own shots when placing an order through a Phantom Agent. This uniqueness has earned Phantom a reputation for proprietary customization in fine art and display lighting products that have found their way into homes, offices, retail establishments, libraries, and museums throughout North, Central, and South America. The Contour projector has experienced worldwide acclaim for its magical “lighted from within” effect, and our linear display lighting strips are equally renowned for their near invisible presence, low voltage power savings, and wireless conduction of electricity.
Phantom leads the lighting industry in a pioneer of user-customization and technical optimization for commercial and residential illumination.
What Makes Phantom Contour Projectors Unique?
First of all, the Phantom combines a high-powered halogen light source with a complex, easily adjustable set of filters that keep the light free from UV and infrared radiation. Phantom manufactures five Contour Projector models that can be custom installed into any ceiling, seamlessly, without damage to the surrounding structure. Furthermore, each of these models is also designed to not only avoid any harm to the ceiling structure, but to also conceal its visible presence from the eye of the casual viewer. Clients who are looking for a sheik, sophisticated and professional presentation of their fine art collection can rely upon this art lighting projector to showcase the maximum value of their artwork and to also provide special effect and mood-related lighting upon command.
Can Phantom fine art projectors showcase rare and valuable paintings?
Yes. Because of the Contour fine art projectors amazing ability to filter out UV and ultraviolet light, collectors in both private and public arenas rely upon Phantom projectors to showcase and protect their most rare and valuable paintings. Phantom Projectors also produce a superior spectrum of light that rivals natural light with none of is deleterious effects.
How do other forms of art appear when lit with a Contour fine art projector?
Photography, pastels, personal oils, and watercolors will look superb both in color and in depth when illuminated by the Contour’s “lighted from within” effect.
This phenomenon is produced by passing the light through a series of lenses and filters that makes the beam itself invisible until it strikes the surface of a painting or sculpture.

What Makes Phantom Linear Cabinet Lights Unique?
Phantom custom cabinet lights are unique in their ability to conceal their physical appearance and also in the unique way they conduct electricity. Our linear cabinet lighting strips do not use visible wires to power their lamps, but rather use existing metal shelf standards to conduct low voltage electricity safely and reliably. Each AC Series linear strip is custom cut to the exact dimensions of the vertical or horizontal surface to which it will be mounted. One of our six model lines is actually designed to be mounted to curved surfaces and can be fitted to any cove or vaulted ceiling in a home or office.
Your choice or xenon, incandescent, or LED lamps will be installed in your linear strip at the time of manufacture, and these lamps will be fitted to festoon mounts than can be individually replaced if a bulb fails so you do not have to replace the entire strip light. See how our festoon lamps compare between lamp types.
How well do these linear strips perform as cabinet lights?
In most cabinet lighting and under cabinet lighting applications, Phantom linear strips are ideal for commercial and residential environments. Because of their “adjustable shelf” technology, they can work with any type of custom shelving found in cabinets, commercial displays, residential armoires, and bookshelves. Three different lamping options are available as well: incandescent, xenon, and super power-saving LED. Phantom cabinet lighting strips can be manufactured as 12V linear strips that maximize energy conservation without compromising the intensity or quality of the light. They also feature dimmer controls that allows for instantaneous adjustment of brightness levels. This makes them ideal low voltage night lights in custom kitchens, break rooms, and bathroom vanity areas. They are also a favorite of librarians and antique dealers, who find the low ambient lighting they emit to be ideal for producing decorative effects that enhance the appearance of rare hardbacks and collectibles.
Is Low Voltage Display Lighting Really That Important?
We cannot emphasize enough the importance of low voltage cabinet lighting installations. Incandescent and xenon bulbs can run up a light bill very quickly, but when regulated by a low voltage transformer, produce the same quality of light at a fraction of the power. This is good for both the environment and for the pocketbook, and it is also ideal for the corporation seeking LEED certification. This is especially true when considering cove lighting fixtures.
Combining a low voltage strip with an LED lamp compounds power savings with the latest and most sophisticated science of illumination to date.
LED Light Bulbs
LED festoon lamps can be installed in Phantom cabinet lighting, display lighting, or cove lighting strip at the time of manufacture. LED light bulbs last longer than any other form of bulb, can render the full spectrum of light, including white light, and require only 20% as much electricity as other bulb types. Combine that with a low voltage strip that is already designed for power savings, and you have the most sophisticated and energy conscious cabinet or display lighting strip that current technology allows.
LED replacement festoon lamps can also be ordered separately and retrofitted to existing linear strips. Ask a Lighting Agent about the benefits of festoon lamp replacement as a possible contributor toward LEED certification.

The Best Art Deserves the Best Art Lighting from the Best Lighting Manufacturer.
The Light Must Strike The Art at Exactly The Right Angle.
In order to understand just how critical angles are to lighting art, try the following experiment: Stand in front of any mirror in your home with a small flashlight and shine the flashlight directly into the mirror. You will instantly be struck by a bright, direct reflection, as the mirror actually magnifies the beam by scattering the photons when it reflects them back into your eyes.
Now, move to different angles, moving the flashlight in the process. When you can clearly see your own form without being blinding by the reflection of the flashlight, you have found be best angle for lighting yourself in the mirror.
The same accent lighting tools are used by designers to position fixtures at the best angles for lighting art. Any surface reflects light to some extent, and while it may not be as intense as a reflection in a mirror, it will nonetheless cause discomfort to viewers. This is especially the case when lighting high-end photography. Photographs have glossy surfaces and are often enclosed in glass frames. The best lighting angle for these forms of art is generally from a recessed position or track lighting installation. This causes the majority of reflected light to angle downward to the floor.
Invest in Low Voltage Equipment.
Low voltage fixtures more often than not provide the best lighting for artwork in museums and galleries. This is because of to several reasons. The first is cost. Low voltage lights consume far less power and can be left on for longer periods of time without exorbitant electricity bills. Low voltage lights also produce a less glaring luminance that is more radiant and ambient. It very difficult to achieve soft picture lighting or lighted from within special effects with line voltage equipment simply because there is too much luminance output striking the piece.
Finally, low-voltage lights are lower wattage and operate at lower temperatures than line voltage lights. This is another reason low-voltage fixtures tend typically produce the best lighting for art because they emit little if any forward throw heat that can dry out paints and cause them to crack over time.
Dimmable Fixtures Give You Greater Lighting Control.
Dimmable fixtures are generally the best art light to use in any display or exhibition. Each work of art is unique and conveys its own message through a subtle interplay of colors and the contrast between light and shadow. A fixed beam of bright light will either overemphasize light or dark elements or certain colors, or, even worse, throw reflected light back into the eyes. Dimmable accent lighting fixtures give you ultimate control over luminance levels so you can achieve the best results when lighting your art. Dimmer controls should always be easy to operate and allow you to make quick adjustments.
Make certain you invest in UV-filters or fixtures designed to filter UV light.
UV radiation is even more deadly to artwork than it is to human skin. It must be eliminated from any source of lighting, or your best art will soon deteriorate and be permanently lost to time. Almost all artwork lighting fixtures are equipped with some sort of mechanism to minimize UV output. However, the best art in your collection cannot afford any exposure to UV light and require the most sophisticated filtration technology possible to protect their integrity and beauty.
Phantom Contour Art Projectors Combine All of These Characteristics Into a Single Design.
Phantom projectors embody all the attributes that characterize the world’s best lights for art. They are low profile, low voltage light sources that conserve power, are extremely cost effective, and easy to angle and adjust. A Contour Projector install on the ceiling can be adjusted to fit the dimensions of a painting, photograph, or sculpture and produce illumination that appears to be more like an “aura” around the piece than a beam of light shooting toward it. We call this “the lighted from within” effect.
Phantom optical projector lights are simple to use and allow you to dim or raise lighting levels at will. The proprietary optical lens design also allows you to fit the beam to the dimensions of any work of art on display. Few people who visit your collection will ever see a Phantom projector, however, because it is smaller than competing models and hides itself either in or on the ceiling to angle an invisible beam of light downward onto the artwork which becomes visible only when it strikes the surface.
Most importantly, Phantom Contour projectors feature patented, sophisticated UV filters that completely strip the light of all ultraviolet radiation so it can safely light your best art with no negative effects resulting. Everyone from private collectors, commercial clients, and professional galleries can benefit from a Phantom Contour Projector, and they can also choose from any of six models that are specifically designed for different environments. A Phantom lighting agent can help you determine which model will work best for your art lighting needs.

Cordless picture lights of any variety offer more placement options because they have no external cords or wires to conceal.
Before investing in cordless picture lighting, it is necessary to obtain a sound understanding of how the different types of picture lights operate and what specific advantages they offer the home and commercial decorator.Because they are either batter operated or install in the ceiling, there is no wiring to conceal. There are also literally thousands of different cordless battery powered picture lights to choose from, a good number of which are very affordable and ideal for smaller households on a budget.
Battery Powered Cordless Lights
Battery powered picture frame lighting fixtures work well for illuminating prints and photographs when high performance is not an issue. They are relatively inexpensive to purchase and do not require a technician to install. Most major lighting manufacturers make them, so one can have name brand equipment at an affordable price point.
Battery powered cordless units are ideal for art lighting any type of print or photograph housed in non glass panel frame. They are also ideal for smaller pictures and fit conveniently over the top of the frame, becoming almost a part of the picture themselves.
Recessed Ceiling Lights
Recessed lights are technically categorized as cordless picture lights because they wire directly into the home or office electrical system as opposed to operating from a power outlet or a battery.
A professional electrician must install these fixtures, and the installer will have to cut into your ceiling to fit them.
If this is affordable and acceptable to you, recessed picture lights will make an ideal source of illumination for larger works of art that require a special spotlight. Multiple unites can be used to light entire collections of prints, photographs, or paintings along an entire wall.
Recessed picture lights can either be low voltage or high voltage, depending on your budget for power costs and the need for lighting intensity.
Low voltage lighting tend to feature pinhole apertures that produce minimal glare. They work very well for any collection where glass panes cover the artwork.
Incandescent bulbs produce a white light that is ideal for illuminating black and white photography. For color photographs, low voltage halogen lighting produce a low wattage, high intensity light with superior color rendering capabilities.
Normally, a lighting company licensed to install recessed lighting also consults with either a lighting design company or certifies its electricians in lighting design. If you have questions about which lights will work best with your collection, your installers should be able to give you sound, professional recommendations on the best fixtures to use or contact a artwork lighting expert.
Fine Art Projectors
When it comes to lighting fine oils on canvas, we really recommend you consider higher price points and more sophisticated technology than battery powered and recessed cordless picture lights. This is because fine art tends to be very delicate and requires light that is completely free of ultraviolet radiation and infrared heat. To ensure the integrity of your art, and to give an original piece the proper spotlight it deserves, consider the benefits of picture lighting with a ceiling-mounted, Phantom Contour Projector.
These proprietary projectors utilize a complex system of lenses and filters to strip the light beam of harmful wavelengths. Like recessed lights, they install above the line of sight into the ceiling of a room.
Click here to read about recessed lighting projectors that are designed for remodel projector applications or replacing an existing accent light without having to patch or paint the ceiling.
Phantom Linear Strip Lights
Perhaps the most innovative way for lighting small pictures like cordless fixtures inside cabinets is by using a linear cabinet lighting fixture.
Phantom linear lighting strips fit directly onto display cabinet shelves and use existing metal shelf standards instead of traditional wiring to conduct electricity. Their low profile position makes them almost impossible for the casual viewer to see, and they can be fitted with incandescent, xenon, and LED bulbs to accommodate any level of lighting and special effects your artwork requires.
Both Phantom Projectors and Linear LED Strip Lights are energy efficient and can be used throughout the night at minimal expense to one’s electrical bill. They are also dimmable, so you can accrue additional savings on power costs by turning the lighting levels down during events or when visitors are either absent or asleep.

I have always been reluctant to specify or furnish Wendelighting optical framing projectors.
As a fine art lighting manufacturer we always strive to improve our lighting equipment. At Phantom Lighting we always attend national trade shows, visit our specifiers and listen to feedback from our clients every chance we can get. We learn ways to solve problems our customers may have encountered on a job and use the constructive feedback to make our lighting fixtures better, easier to install and most importantly, user friendly. We occasionally get feedback on competitive products worth noting. So, when we hear a really good one, we like to pass it on to those who are considering using Phantom Lighting projectors.I manage a large lighting showroom in Houston. I have always been reluctant to specify or furnish framing projectors to my customers because they are expensive and usually nothing but trouble. My lighting representative showed me the Phantom Contour Projector and just how easy it was to install over Wendelighting® optical projector or Laymance optical projectors, so I decided to use nine RM Series (remodel housings) on a retro-fit job. My installer was quite pleased with how easy the rough in process went, especially since no patching or painting was required. We trimmed out the projectors yesterday and I could not be more pleased. The ease and simplicity of the adjustable shutters makes this one of the most affordable and effective framing projectors on the market. I also used the custom template to light not only two works individually, but three on one wall. I plan to make Phantom Contour Projectors my standard for lighting fine art.
Phantom Lighting differentiates itself from all other recessed lighting manufacturers by engineering fine art lighting fixtures and low voltage display lighting products found nowhere else in the world. Phantom Lighting has earned a reputation as pioneers by developing patented technology that delivers precise measurements and variations of intensity from concealed lighting sources. No other art lighting manufacturer devotes the amount of time and energy that we invest in adapting our proprietary technology to the specific needs of each commercial and residential client. The Phantom Contour Projector has earned world-renowned acclaim for its ability to create the magical effect of “lighting art from within,” and our Phantom Strip Lighting series eliminates wiring by uniting near-invisible fixtures with display cases and shelving so as to fill the interior space with light that appears to emanate from all points at once. and art becomes light.

Phantom contour projectors are specified to illuminate upscale Dallas muti-use commercial development.
When the lighting design team at Craig Robert Associates Inc needed something special at an upscale commercial development project in Dallas Texas, they turned to Phantom Lighting System for a custom lighting solution.Lighting designers at Craig Roberts Associates Inc wanted to create a very unique and impressive lighting display that would catch the attention of potential tenants, clients and guests. The office space was designed as a leasing center that included an extensive Asian art collection, marketing center, and several meeting rooms to entertain potential clients.
Between rooms, architects created a series of hidden pocket doors that could be opened for large events and closed to create smaller venues. Rather than attaching raised letters to the door panels, the lighting designers used a series of recessed optical framing projectors that would project the Asian symbols on the wall. Through a sophisticated lighting control system, scenes were created to turn off the lights when the doors were open and back on when the doors were closed.
To accomplish this unique lighting effect, custom Rosco gobos were fabricated from digital files provided by the architect. A negative image was silk screened on Rosco glass gobos designed to fit perfectly inside Phantom projectors. The custom gobos allowed the designers to achieve a clean floating effect and separation between brushstrokes, without unsightly bridges created by standard metal pattern gobos.
Phantom Projectors transform the science of lighting installation into the art of illumination. In the past, lighting installation professionals shied away from framing projectors that required complicated lens selection, large fixture enclosures, and the necessity to cut custom templates. Projectors had a bad reputation before Phantom entered the market. Now, however, our patented optical technology has changed the nature of fine art lighting, not only with proprietary lighting techniques, but also by improving process flow for lighting installation professionals.
Our reputation continues to grow from coast to coast as more and more installers choose Phantom Lighting over every other form of fine art lighting projector because of its sophisticated delivery housed in robust, easy-to-install mountings.
If you are interested in learning more about Phantom Lighting, our Contour Projector or LED Lighting Strips, feel free to call a lighting representative in your area for a complimentary on site demonstration. We developed our technology specifically to enhance art with a timeless and mythic sense of eternal lighting.
Answers.com defines a Phantom as "Something apparently seen, heard, or sensed, but having no physical reality; a ghost or an apparition." We chose the word Phantom to illustrate the function and essence of our patented technology with an archetypal symbol whose universal appeal speaks to all ages and intrigues even the most analytical and skeptical of minds. Phantoms almost never appear as tangible forms to the viewer, but their activities and tangible presence is the stuff of both legend and documentary. On film they often appear as brilliant flashes of light that emanate from another dimension. Phantom projectors and strip lights produce light around artwork and within displays in much the same manner, making them the ghosts of the lighting machine that create magical effects and spatial fields of eminent light that appear sourceless and timeless. In almost every mythology, a Phantom remains invisible, and if it is seen at all, it appears as a luminous aura that surrounds a place of significance. Legends often equate visitations to sacred locations or areas within an old mansion or castle where significant events occurred. Man has always placed special significance on certain places and events, and man has always recorded that significance either has history, myth, or some form of art. We developed our LED technology specifically to enhance art with a timeless and mythic sense of eternal lighting. We created fixtures that the eye cannot see and special photometric lenses that hide the beams of light radiating from bulbs and lamps. Just like the ghosts of legend and popular documentary, it is almost impossible to see a Phantom Projector or Strip Light, but you always see and feel the effects of its presence.
When you look at a painting illuminated by a Phantom Projector, you actually see a field of light surrounding both the picture and the frame. This effect is known as "lighting from within," and it adds a third dimension to any two dimensional artwork that creates a living presence around the canvas, oils, and ornately carved wooden frame. Private collectors of art and commercial art galleries alike concur that this is the best way to light a painting, as it eliminates the physical obtrusion of traditional picture lights and does away as well with a visible beam of light produced by standard projectors. The eternal nature of art is also best revealed in the preserving light of Phantom. Our technology filters all infrared and ultraviolet light from the beam prior to it touching the canvas. With a color-rendering index equivalent to natural light, but exponentially safer to use with delicate and antique paints and surfaces, Phantom brings the past into the present and extends it without harm or degradation into annals of continued, future fame. Phantom is much more than just a lighting manufacturer. We are lighting scientists.
Understanding the unique properties of light is what enabled us to develop our breakthrough patents in display and showcase lighting technology. Light is the only phenomenon in the Universe that fills a space without consuming space. By applying this absolute law of physics with a less-is-more approach to fixture design, Phantom developed a wireless strip light that conducts either low voltage or standard voltage signals safely and invisibly through metal shelf standards using LED lamps. The lighting strip hugs the surface so well it actually blends into its surroundings invisibly. Small, tiny lamps along the strip radiate light into the enclosed space, filling every cubic centimeter with a balanced luminosity that enshrouds and accents books, jewels, porcelain, ornate carvings, and photography; and adds beauty to the function and form of fine cabinetry and vaulted ceiling coves.
Mystique defines the essence of Phantom, bringing eclecticism, advanced technology, mystery, and sophistication into a synthesis of light that makes art become alive and life itself a work of art now made visible in a whole new light. Click here to read informative articles that contain a world of information on how to apply this revolution in both physics and aesthetics, and click here to learn more about the lighting technology itself.

Lighting Installations using the Phantom Contour Projector.
Each lighting installation is a unique experience in customized environmental improvement. Art lighting, for example, requires precise angles to prevent glare and shadow. Most complications with traditional projectors result from the limitations innate within traditional fixtures and lenses that make it difficult to precisely adjust the optimal level of light. Phantom Projectors resolve these issues with sophisticated, highly flexible components that allow for precise beam placement and pinpoint photometric adjustment. In virtually every lighting installation, the Phantom projector will beam exactly the right amount of light onto the art or sculpture without excess spill light or diminishing shadows. To achieve this effect, the lighting installation team will first darken the room to replicate nighttime conditions. This is imperative to find the right levels of light required for the task. Installers then systematically work to position the lighting fixtures for precise beam spread and luminosity, producing the “lighting from within” effect for which Phantom Projectors have earned world renown.
While it is true that Phantom projectors are simple to install, we recommend that homeowners and curators hire professional lighting installation consultants to achieve optimal results. Damage often results from do-it-yourself attempts to mount projectors in rooms with tall ceilings. Placing the lighting fixture too close to the wall impairs the projector’s ability to properly aim. Builders and electricians, while technically skilled in electrical installation, often make this mistake unknowingly due to a lack of experience in fine art lighting. The fixture then requires relocation, and the ceiling has to be repaired at additional cost after the fact. Phantom lighting installation experts can prevent this needless expense by positioning the projector at the best possible location the first time. They then work systematically to achieve the proper beam spread that forms the foundation for any successful lighting installation. Because each job is a custom project, the lighting installation team will also draw upon a vast inventory of unique and specialized bulbs. With literally hundreds of options ranging in all sizes, shapes, and colors, lamp technology has evolved into not only a science, but also an art form unto itself. These factors converge like a beam of light onto the subject, creating the magical lighting effect that has remarkably differentiated Phantom products as one-of-a-kind to our industry.
Phantom professionals have made a career of fine art lighting. Throughout the Houston area, which serves as home to our corporate headquarters, the wealthiest art patrons and professional art galleries come to Phantom whenever they need cutting-edge technology applied with the subtle and classic grace of fine art. Call us today to see how we can light your world in a better, more convenient way.

The fine art almost appears to be floating on the wall!
One of our clients was kind enough to share a picture of some Phantom Lighting in his home. It is a really interesting combination of both the Phantom Contour Projector and Phantom Lighting Strips in a dining room. The owner wanted to create a floating effect for both the granite counter as well as the original artwork. To accomplish his goals, a Phantom Contour Projector was used to showcase the art and a template was cut to shape the light perfectly to the canvas. To illuminate the shelf a small hidden Phantom Strip Light was grooved into the bottom of the granite. The linear light source provided just what the client was looking for.

Installing recessed light for fine art using the top access Contour projector.
I am frequently asked, "When should I use the top access housing to install a Phantom Contour Projector?" If you have attic access, this is the time to consider using the top access projector housing. Otherwise, use one of our other recessed projector housing types. The top access projector is the most custom and most difficult installation technique to master. That is because it requires two people to perform the installation and a custom template must be cut to mask the light to fit the art. Phantom Lighting manufacturers five different housings to cover most applications.
The top access installation is by far the most sophisticated method as only the small tube penetrates the ceiling and can hardly be seen. That eliminates the need for a ceiling access panel or exposed cover plate. In the illustration to the right you can see the small black projector cone in the top left hand corner aiming towards the art. Once the focus has been set, the installer will paint the cone to match the ceiling.
The installer is using an existing recessed light as a means of passing the slide to his helper in the attic. This is what makes this type of installation challenging to first time installers. We invite you to read our template cutting instructions to learn more about the procedure. Other installation methods allow you to use the user friendly shutters to adjust the light shape and save time, without sacrificing the final results.

Ceiling flush mount light using the float finish contour projector housing.
My architect has suggested that I use a flush mount ceiling projector housing for a more sophisticated look. Can you explain to me how your round ceiling flange is finished out? It looks so big and bulky! The Phantom Lighting float finish housing does have a large flange at first glance. However, the outer flange is designed to overlap the sheetrock and provide a solid foundation for the painter to finish. We designed the outer panel that way so that the contractor does not have to use tape to float the joint and to prevent it from cracking should the house settle. Once it is properly floated, the outer ring disappears and only the small hairline crack is visible on the inner cover plate. Click on the image above to enlarge.
When you purchase a flush mount projector housing from a Phantom Lighting distributor you get illustrated floating instructions in both English and Spanish to make the process easy and understandable. The final product is basically up to the painter. If he does a good job, than everybody is happy, including your architect.
For new construction applications, we also provide a handy rough-in ring that can be nailed to the ceiling rafters prior to sheetrock. Once the sheetrock is installed, the housing is inserted into the opening by your electrician and finished out during the floating process by the drywall contractor.
I have to agree with your architect about keeping the ceiling clean. One of the magical properties of using an optical framing projector is hiding the light source.

Lighting projector uses Rosco steel and custom gobos for creating images and patterns.
Custom gobos and Phantom Contour Projectors are used in virtually every lighting project these days by professional lighting designers.Historically, the use of pattern projectors and image projectors was limited to the theatrical industry because of the size of the equipment. Most theatrical equipment is surface mounted and therefore could not be used in residential and commercial environments. Today, lighting designers have smaller more powerful recessed lighting fixtures such as the Phantom pattern projector to introduce this magical pattern effect into homes, offices, retail spaces and executive conference rooms. In fact, Disney designers rececently used Phantom Contour pattern projectors on the cruise ship "Disney Magic" in the Parrot Cay Restuarant.
Phantom Lighting System has created a custom Gobo holder designed specifically for Rosco Steel Gobos. Rosco Laboratories presently manufactures over 700 standard steel gobo designs that fit perfectly into the Phantom Contour Projector. Manufactured like a stencil, all elements of the design must be connected with tabs to the outer ring of the gobo.
Rosco Laboratories also manufacturers custom silk screened glass gobos made on quartz glass using a unique coating silk-screened onto the base. This "painted" coating allows your design to avoid "tabbing" needed in custom steel gobos. This method is very similar to the hand cut templates that are used to illuminate paintings and sculptures in the Contour projector. Corporate logos can now be projected onto the floor or a wall in both white and full color depending on the design.

Illuminate two paintings separately from one Phantom Contour Projector.
I have two small paintings on a wall in my home that I want to light. I have seen in several magazines lighting fixtures that illuminate multiple objects from one light. Will the Phantom Contour Projector do this or can you recommend somebody who's fixture can?The ability to illuminate several painting or irregular shaped objects from one optical framing projector is one of the main features of the PHANTOM CONTOUR PROJECTOR.
By simply cutting several openings in the brass slide you can selectively mask the light to illuminate only the art without spilling light on the wall around them. The effect gives the art a lighted from within look, as if they were floating on the wall. We also have a shutter method for illuminating single paintings, tapestries, and furniture.
Phantom Contour Projectors are extremely easy to install compared to other optical framing projectors on the market. See for yourself how our OPTICAL FRAMING PROJECTOR compares against the competition.
Regardless of your situation, we have a housing and solution to meet your fine art lighting needs. In fact, we have the only REMODEL HOUSING on the market! That means you can install the light without having to patch or paint the ceiling.

Will the Phantom Contour Projector effectively light art from across the room?
I am an art consultant in Southern California who is familiar with projection lighting by other companies. I saw your lighting fixtures at Light Fair 2005 in New York and have wanted to use them ever since learned about them. I finally have an art lighting application that requires a very special fixture. The room is two stories tall, glass on both sides and does not have attic access. Can the Phantom Contour Projector shoot across the room and still frame the art?
Yes it can! The PHANTOM CONTOUR PROJECTOR produces a focused light source and the lenses can be changed to accommodate a long narrow throw of light. Likewise, you can change the lenses to illuminate a large painting by expanding the beam pattern, without loosing the ability to set the focus.
We recently photographed an installation in Texas that is very similar to what you are describing. The above images show both a daytime and nighttime shot of the room. In this application, one Phantom Contour Projector was used to illuminate the large contemporary painting mounted vertically above the fireplace. The Phantom projector was mounted on the opposite wall, inside the coat closet next to the front door and penetrated the wall roughly 8' up from the floor and the light projects some 30' across the room with dramatic results. The small wall penetration was only 1 1/2" in diameter and can hardly be seen from anywhere in the room. The installer used a custom template to mask the light from hitting the wall, creating a floating effect. It's like the painting is "Lighted from within" and the soft colors of the art can be seen in detail, as the artist intended.
PHANTOM LIGHTING SYSTEMS manufactures specialty lighting fixtures such as the CONTOUR PROJECTOR for art lighting and PHANTOM LIGHT STRIPS for display lighting. Understanding the optical characteristics of the Phantom Contour Projector.
I am trying to understand how the Phantom Contour Projector technically works. Do you have a section or cut away illustration showing all the internal components of the lighting fixture, especially the lenses in the optical chamber? Thanks
The PHANTOM CONTOUR PROJECTOR utilizes a 75-watt MR16/FO lamp designed originally for the fiber optic industry. This lamp produces a 13mm diameter circle of light at the focal point roughly 40mm from the lamp. The highly concentrated halogen light then passes through a 13mm aperture basically removing any stray light created by the lamp reflector and redirecting it inside the projector housing.
This focused light then passes through two Pyrex glass condenser lenses. The first lens is a 60mm, 75fl BCX (bi-convex) lens. The second lens is a 60mm, 150fl PCX (plano-convex) lens. Both condenser lenses collect the light and magnify the intensity of the light as it travels through the condenser assembly.
After passing through the masking ring, which holds the shutters or confinement plate, the light is then reprocessed and distributed to the art by one or more 39mm, 75fl Pyrex glass focal lenses. The focal lenses are the one variable in the system that allow the installer to manipulate the beam of light from a spot to a flood. All other lenses are fixed. The lighting designers at Phantom Lighting System have been awarded a US PATENT for innovation and design.
Now you see why this type of equipment is so specialized and not marketed by every lighting manufacturer. Here at Phantom Lighting System, we are committed to producing only finest lighting instruments designed specifically for illuminating art. Check out our website at http://www.phantomlighting.com/ for more technical information of selecting focal lenses, determining where to mount the projector and photometric data.

Selecting the right housing for your Phantom Contour Projector light.
I am interested in purchasing several of your Phantom Contour Projectors. However, I am confused by all the different housings that you offer. Which recessed model do I need for a clean ceiling appearance?Thank you for your interest in our Phantom lighting projector. I am more than happy to discuss the various housings we offer and assist you in ordering the right fine art lighting equipment.
Basically, we have four different Phantom Contour Projector housings:
RM SERIES
The remodel housing is designed for adding the projector light without damage to the ceiling. For example, you can replace an old eyeball fixture or accent light with one of these housings. You simple enlarge the existing hole, remove the old recessed lighting fixture and install the new Phantom remodel housing. The remodel housing has a discrete round white ceiling plate with a 1/8" tapered beveled edge.
FF SERIES
The float finish housing is designed for the most attractive and discrete ceiling appearance. The 1/8" machined flange is securely attached to the ceiling during installation and then floated and textured and painted to match the ceiling. These trims can be wallpaper, faux painted or fabricated to match the ceiling finish.
TA SERIES
The top access housing is designed for commercial jobs or residences where is in not practical to install or service the light. This housing eliminates the need for scaffolding or man lifts to access the equipment. A special elongated trim is provided with the housing to finish off the ceiling penetration. Although convenient for tall ceilings, this particular housing is the most challenging when it comes to adjusting the projector.
NC SERIES
The new construction housing is designed for new work and old work if attic access is available. The housing comes with heavy duty fixture bars for installation during the framing stage. Just like the remodel housing the NC Series has the same discrete round white ceiling plate with a 1/8" tapered beveled edge.
The float finish housing is by far the most attractive and least obvious of the ceiling trims. If you go with the new construction housing or the remodeler housing, the ceiling plates look the same should you decide to add more in the future. Some people are funny about seeing ceiling plates and they tolerate speakers, smoke detectors and sprinkler heads. Ultimately, the decision is up to you. If it were my house, the FF Series is the way I would go.
