Infrared Lighting Damage

A 75-watt contour projector with special halogen lamps is used to dramatically illuminate colorful artwork above the fireplace. Hidden in the ceiling the light is shaped to the exact contour of the object without spilling light onto the surrounding wall.If you are one of the many collectors of beautiful artwork, then you probably realize the important role illumination plays in highlighting your prized possessions. One must be extremely careful when selecting a accent light fixture for showcasing purposes. Many bulbs emit both infrared and ultra-violet light, which can damage your art over time. These rays cause the temperature of the painting's surface to rise when the incandescent or halogen low voltage light bulb is on, and then drop back to normal after the light has been turned off. If this on/off cycle goes on long enough problems such as fading, cracking, and deterioration of the picture itself can take place. Your artwork can be permanently destroyed because of this.

Information on Infrared

Infrared light falls in between the visible and microwave sections of the electromagnetic spectrum. This type of illumination has wavelengths that range from red to violet light. There are two types of infrared light, far waves and short waves. Far waves are thermal in nature. We experience this type of radiation in the form of heat (ex: the sun, a fire, or a radiator). Shorter infrared light rays have no heat properties. A person cannot even feel these shorter wavelengths. A good example of a device, which uses these short waves, is your TV remote control.

MR16 halogen lamps are widely used for art and accent lighting. They come in many wattages and beam patterns which makes thenm a perfect accent lighting tool for lighting professionalsLonger wave infrared light that comes in the form of heat is detected by our sensitive nerve endings, which tell the difference between hot and cold sources. This type of light in the long wavelength form is used in fast food restaurants. Heat lamps, which keep the food warm, use this type of illumination.  Although people cannot see this light some animals can. Pit viper snakes have sensory “pits” which can detect infrared radiation emitted from other warm-blooded animals. All people and animals give off infrared light, so do other objects such as the sun and stars. Since the primary source of this type of illumination is heat or thermal radiation, any object, which contains some kind of temperature, shows its colors in infrared form.

This type of technology is used in astronomy and meteorology to help us study our planet. However, this type of illumination can be harmful to people who are exposed to it for a long time. Your artwork is no exception here.

Take The Heat Off Your Artwork

Phantom Lighting is proud to offer you its unique contour projector for your art lighting needs. Easy to install, safe, and efficient, this projector distributes an even illumination source over your cherished collectibles. As a art lighting manufacturer, we have engineered a lighting fixture that not only safely illuminates your art but, also is easy to install and a snap to adjust.

A cross section of the Phantom Contour Projector reveals the halogen light engine and optical chamber. This highly efficient accent lighting tool ia widely used to illuminate art, sculpture and furniture.Constructed out of sturdy aluminum, the Phantom contour projector is extremely versatile. Two very important features enabling this advantage are the universal rotating ring and the fully adjustable mounting cradle. The rotating ring can rotate at 360 degrees and helps to secure the projector into the right position. The mounting cradle locks the contour projector into position and gives the user the flexibility of taking it out of this position for cleaning and maintenance.

The user has other advantages as well. The contour projector will never harm or damage your artwork. Infrared heat is trapped inside the fixture, while most ultra-violet radiation is filtered out. Phantom Lighting even offers special Ultra-Violet light filters for more sensitive art pieces. In addition, the glass focal lenses can be adjusted so the light beam stays in conjunction with the contours of the object you are trying to highlight. This means no shadows and an absence of reflective glare. Your painting will have a “lighted from within” look and stand out in beautiful radiance for all to see.

Infrared Should Never Go Unnoticed

Many people need to realize that light bulbs produce both infrared and UV rays, which can be damaging to your works of art. Keeping this in mind, it may be time to switch out your existing art lighting fixture for a better one. Phantom Lighting's contour projector is extremely versatile and infrared safe. Be sure to let your prized paintings sparkle with the most eloquent illumination only provided to you through Phantom Lighting products.
