Will lighting this bookcase cause damages that will diminish its value?
If you attempt to install standard cabinet lighting fixtures yourself, damages are almost certain to result. Standard fixtures are not made for the type of unique dimensions and construction that characterize antique cabinetry. After all, your cabinet was built before the advent of cabinet lighting, so any off the shelf fixtures made to fit modern cabinets will result in an awkward fit that is sure to diminish its appearance and value.
Are there any lights, then, that can be used to light this bookshelf?
Yes. Our custom-manufactured linear strip lights can provide excellent options based on the design of the piece. Since many antique cabinets were not designed with front edge trim on each shelf, it is not possible to conceal lighting strips on the underside of each shelf. However, if your shelves do have front edge trim on the shelves, then this affords you the possibility of using horizontally oriented strips.
These LED strip lights will be cut to the exact length of your shelves and will be fitted to the front underside of each shelf, hidden by the edge trim. The light will be directed downward and toward the back of the bookcase interior. This will create a warm, even glow of light that gently accents the color and texture of your bibliothèque and your book collection.
I’ve heard about vertically mounted strips. Shouldn’t we use those because they are easier to conceal in this case?
In most cases this is true. If the cabinet has reveals on either side and/or doors, vertically mounted lighting strips often offer the best solution, provided the custom cabinet lighting can be hidden behind the reveals or door frames. In fact, if horizontal attachment to each shelf is not a viable approach, then vertical mounting is the only good option.
I will be selling rare books in this cabinet and I am concerned that visible shelf lighting strips will detract from its appearance. Should I add a reveal to the edge of each cabinet shelf?
Any physical alteration is certain to diminish cabinet value. A reveal sufficient to hide even our thin fixtures might look inconsistent with the original design. However if this does not present a problem, then this would certainly be an option.
I am concerned about heat damage to my books. Will the lights build up heat behind the glass paned doors?
You have come to the right place to solve that problem. Until now, nothing could be done about heat buildup with any light source, LED or otherwise. However, our new LED festoon design is the first antique reproduction cabinet light ever to produce continuous bright light with no unwanted heat, but with the same warm tone as incandescent lighting. This means you can leave your bookshelf lighting on all day long during store hours and not have to worry about damaging your books. These festoons are not only heat free, they are UV free as well, plus they are dimmable.
How can I be sure that all of the cabinet interior will be lit?
As the name suggests, Phantom Lighting is designed to provide attractive lighting effects while concealing the source of light… “See the light, not the fixture”. Depending on the orientation and placement of the library shelf lighting fixtures, we accomplish this by using integral concealment trims whose profiles are matched to the application. Each type of trim is designed to allow the light to be evenly distributed and contained within the illuminated space, while hiding the light sources from view.
Do you make other kinds of lights other than custom furniture lights?
