Art Installations
Several Houston art installations in December 2022 offer a variety of perspectives on contemporary urban life. The works will explore the city’s diverse cultures and the rich sensorial phenomena that occur in urban spaces. Some of the exhibitions will feature works from international artists. Some of the exhibits will include a wide range of materials and environments. Some of the exhibitions will be free and others will be priced. Regardless of the exhibition, all works will challenge the viewer to understand the significance of the artwork.

The Solstice exhibition challenges accepted narratives of the shortest days of the year. The art installation includes soundscapes and an audiovisual installation that allows visitors to change the speed of the sun. It also features four women photographers who document the shortest days of the year. The artists feature a wide variety of genres and themes. Throughout the exhibition, the viewer can change the speed of the sun, simulate the shortest days of the year, and experience a variety of climatic changes. The exhibition will run from September 22 to November 18 and will be accompanied by a catalogue with an essay by curator Elizabeth Ferrer.
Lives of the Gods: Divinity in Maya Art will feature Maya visual narratives that feature gods. This art installation will be hosted on a specially designed website, and it will be reproduced in real time. The works will feature a cast of gods, including Ix Wak Jalam Chan, the queen of ancient Americas. These artworks will be accompanied by a documentary film, as well as public programs. The exhibition is scheduled to open in the fall of 2022.
Wyatt Kahn’s sculptures combine geometric abstraction with everyday objects. These abstract forms are juxtaposed with glasses and foot crushing light bulbs. He builds upon his inspiration in nature, and his paintings are marked by textured surfaces. He has adapted the forms of canvas wall works into public sculpture. He will create a series of sculptural installations that will reflect his experience as a construction worker. His artwork will also be accompanied by a new video.
The Galveston Railroad Museum will feature an exhibition that is a “playground” for the senses. The exhibit will be the size of a tennis court. There will be multiple trains, a natural geology museum, and an artfully crafted city. It will also feature general admission.
The Solomon Family Insectarium will be an indoor attraction in the Richard Gilder Center for Science. It will feature life-sized representations of influential Indigenous American rulers. This work will be part of the Richard Gilder Center for Education. The art installation will be on view to January 9, 2023. The exhibition will include works from private collections as well as works from the Texas Railroad Museum.
The Degenerate Art Ensemble will present excerpts from Anima Mundi, as well as a new short performance film collaboration. The group will also hold a studio in the downtown area of Houston.
