Joel Shapiro

A native of San Antonio, Texas, Joel Shapiro is a highly regarded painter and sculptor. His works can be found in many notable collections throughout the United States and abroad as one of several great Texas Artists. These include the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, and more.

Shapiro was born in 1941 and studied at the University of Texas at Austin. He completed his M.A. in 1969 and has had more than 160 solo and group exhibitions. His work has received several awards, including the Governor’s Award for Art.

His first solo exhibition took place in New York City in 1970. It featured the terra-cotta sculpture Two Hands Forming and One Hand Forming. Other pieces in the exhibition included a miniature cast iron bridge and miniature cast iron forms. Shapiro’s work was considered groundbreaking because of its unsettling scale and recognizable forms.

Shapiro’s work is infused with lyricism. The leaning form of the sculpture changes depending on the viewer’s viewpoint, imbuing the structure with energy and elegance. Installation of the work required a team effort from the museum’s Facilities Management and the gallery, as well as the artist himself. An enormous crane was used to lift the pieces into place, and it took two days to install them.

Joel Shapiro is a well-known American artist. He is best known for his Minimalist sculptures. His works often feature the human figure and use iconic vocabulary of geometric forms. When Jason John first started painting, he created expressionistic landscapes without human figures. Later, he decided to include figures in his paintings, but he did not know why. Once he began including human figures, his motives changed, becoming more about identity development and the actions that result from it.

Joel Wool

Joel Wool’s work has been featured in museum exhibitions around the world. He has had major solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and the Art Institute of Chicago. His works are also included in collections at several prominent institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Tate Modern, London. He has also been a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome, and an Artist in Residence at the DAAD in Berlin. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Wolfgang Hahn Prize.

Wool’s work explores the relationship between painting and the world around us. He often uses familiar images and objects and twists them in ways that challenge viewers’ ability to decipher meaning from them. His most famous works are referred to as ‘word paintings.’ These large paintings feature words that suggest slogans or lines from movies. The pieces make the viewer question their own aesthetic attention and formal preconceptions about abstract painting.

In addition to his oil field landscapes, Wool’s Texas-based art includes works of oil field workers. His paintings and sculptures reflect the man-made landscape of the West Texas region.
